How Do You Make At Home Hair Color Last Longer On Gray Hair?

To make at-home hair color last longer on gray hair, both the type of permanent hair color for gray coverage that you choose as well as your after-color maintenance are important. Gray hair can be more resistant to color, so opt for permanent hair color formulas like Superior Preference that are specifically designed for gray coverage. During application, ensure thorough and even saturation, particularly on resistant areas.

After coloring your hair, switch to sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners formulated for color-treated hair, and wash with cooler water to prevent premature fading. Minimizing sun exposure and heat styling can also significantly prolong your color’s vibrancy. Regular root touch-ups can help you maintain a fresh look between full coloring sessions.

What is the Difference Between L’Oreal Preference and L’Oreal Excellence Haircolor

Superior Preference and L’Oreal Excellence both provide permanent hair color and gray coverage, but the two different hair color lines focus on different priorities.

• L'Oréal Superior Preference is a liquid hair dye gel that provides fade-defying color for up to 9 weeks. Superior Preference is designed to deliver luminous, multi-dimensional color with natural-looking highs and lows. It is specifically formulated for fade-defying color that resists fading, dullness, and brassiness. The hair color kit includes Shine Protect Conditioner to maintain vibrancy. While it provides good gray coverage and conditioning benefits, its primary focus is on radiant, salon-inspired results and fade resistance.
• L'Oréal Excellence has a rich, non-drip crème formula. Its core strength lies in providing 100% gray coverage, even for stubborn grays, making it an excellent choice for those whose main concern is completely concealing gray hair. Excellence features a Triple Protection System designed to protect hair before, during, and after coloring. While Excellence hair color delivers long-lasting, rich color, its emphasis is more on protective care and complete gray coverage with a uniform color result.

If you're seeking luminous, multi-dimensional, fade-defying shine permanent hair color with a more translucent finish, choose Superior Preference. If your priority is 100% stubborn gray coverage hair color and a protective coloring process, Excellence would be the more suitable option.

Which L’Oreal Preference Shade Should I Choose?

The best L’Oréal Preference shade for you depends on your natural hair color, undertone, and desired result. Superior Preference offers more than 50 fade-defying shine permanent hair color shades, so you can choose a tone that enhances your look while delivering long-lasting vibrancy and beautiful gray coverage.

When choosing your shade, start by identifying your current base color and your undertone (warm, cool, or neutral). Warm shades tend to have golden or copper tones, while cool shades lean ashy. If you’re aiming for a natural result, select a shade within one to two levels of your current color. For dramatic change, consider staying within three levels and consult the shade guide included on the back of each box to show the color results depending on your starting hair color.

If you’re coloring gray hair, shades closest to your natural color tend to provide the most seamless, blended gray coverage. For subtle brightness, choose a shade slightly lighter than your natural tone.

To choose the best shade for your desired look, check out our hair color quiz or choose any Superior Preference shade on this page and select “Live Try On” to virtually preview your new color.
