It’s officially time for a little spring cleaning! No—we’re not talking about your wardrobe, but rather your skin care routine. You probably know first-hand how months of icy, frigid weather can take a toll on your skin (hello there, dryness). But with winter soon coming to an end (yay!) and spring right around the corner (double yay!), it’s time to start thinking about how you should revamp your skin care routine for the new season.
During the wintertime, your skin may experience excessive dryness thanks to the low moisture in the air. So, it’s usually benefical to reach for heavier creams and intensely moisturizing products. But just like you swap your puffy parkas for denim jackets, it could be a good idea to switch out certain skin care products come spring. Prepare your skin for the warmer weather that lies ahead by swapping some of the key skin care products in your routine. Here’s how to make the transition.
Skin looking a little dull after months spent in freezing temps? Once spring rolls around try adding exfoliation to your weekly beauty routine. Exfoliating can help slough away dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, which could be making your skin look dull. As for how often you should exfoliate, there’s no right or wrong answer—everyone’s skin is different, so pay attention to how your responds to determine the frequency that’s right for you. Try a gentle facial scrub once a week to start.
And don’t forget the rest of your body! If your skin is feeling rough after being cooped up underneath heavy sweaters and snow boots, use an exfoliating body cleanser in the shower. Pay particular attention to areas like your elbows, feet, and knees, which can be prone to dryness—and slather on a body lotion while you’re still damp once (this can help lock in hydration).
When it’s chilly outside, you may gravitate to rich face lotions to help hydrate overly dry skin. But once spring has sprung, you may find that using a lightweight water-based moisturizer, like the L'Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care for Normal/Oily Skin or L'Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care for Normal/Dry Skin, which are formulated with hyaluronic acid and aloe water can help provide long-lasting hydration.
This is one skin care rule you should follow year-round! No matter what season it is, you should never skip out on applying a broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen. That’s because spending prolonged periods of time out in the sun without protection can lead to damage (which can show up as visible signs of aging like dark spots and wrinkles down the road). And according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, you can get burned, even on cloudy days. That means even if you wake up to a rainy spring day, you should apply a broad-spectrum SPF as the last step in your skin care routine.
If you find you’re always in a rush to get ready in the morning, consider switching to a moisturizer formulated with SPF, like the L'Oréal Paris RevitaLift Bright Reveal Brightening Day Lotion SPF 30, to help cut down on the number of steps in your skin care routine. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends wearing an SPF of 15 or higher for everyday use and an SPF of 30 or higher on days that you know you’ll be spending an extended amount of time in the sun. Toss your SPF sunscreen in your purse so you can reapply it every two hours—and don’t forget the sunglasses!
In the winter, you may reach for a heavier foundation to cover up any dryness. But you might want to opt for a lighter foundation come spring. One of our fave types of foundation of the moment is the cushion compact. Typically, cushion compact foundation offers a buildable finish, since it dispenses just the right amount of makeup when you press the applicator down into the cushion.
The L'Oréal Paris True Match™ Lumi Cushion Foundation allows you to build luminous coverage with each tap with its liquid formula and sponge. Bonus: The cushion compact also comes with a built-in mirror, which means that’s one less separate item you have to carry in your purse! Here’s how to use it:
Step 1: Gently press the applicator into the foundation cushion.
Step 2: Tap the applicator onto your skin to deliver the perfect dose of a foundation. Apply it to your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin.
Step 3: Build to your desired coverage level and blend all over using gentle downward strokes in a tapping motion.
