An Editor With Oily Skin Shares Her Makeup Routine For Dewy Skin

You can be dewy without looking greasy.

While I love makeup looks that are traditionally associated with the summer season 一 think bronze, glowing skin 一 I’m definitely more fond of the fall and winter seasons in general. Trading in sweat and humidity for cozy clothes and chilly weather is my favorite. But, that doesn't mean that I’m willing to trade in radiant skin for matte makeup, which tends to dominate during the cooler months. I plan on continuing to sport luminous makeup this fall 一 especially given that I’ve finally discovered how to achieve glowy skin that doesn’t look greasy on my oily skin. Keep reading to see my everyday fall makeup routine that lets my  oily skin look dewy without the added shine.

Step 1. Prep With Water-Based Products

The best way to ensure that your skin looks fresh and radiant is to have a solid skin care routine that works for you. I noticed my skin becoming extremely oily during my teenage years, and while it’s slightly less greasy than it used to be, I still struggle with excess oil throughout the day. Regardless of your skin type, applying moisturizer is key. For me, I’ve realized that wearing lightweight, gel-like moisturizers under my makeup is best. So after cleansing and applying my face serums, I apply a lightweight moisturizer like the L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Liquid Moisturizer For Normal & Oily Skin which is water-based, thin in texture and provides hydration to the skin.

Step 2. Apply Tinted Serum In Lieu Of Foundation

For everyday makeup, I like to opt for a base product that’s natural-looking but evens  out my complexion. The L’Oréal Paris True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum has been my recent go-to. I was initially afraid that it would make my skin look greasy as I usually associate tinted serums with having incredibly dewy finishes, but I was pleasantly surprised. The subtle, luminous mineral pigments in it makes it look radiant on the skin, but the formula itself is not greasy or oily at all. If I want some additional coverage, I’ll just mix in a drop or two of the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24 Hour Fresh Wear Foundation, Lightweight which has lots of coverage and is incredibly long lasting.

Step 3. Conceal Dark Circles With Lightweight Concealer

One of my biggest physical insecurities is the hollowness under my eyes in combination with very dark circles. I’ve made the mistake in the past of applying extremely full coverage, matte concealer to that area. And while it covered darkness, it emphasized fine lines and ultimately looked cakey. Because my under-eye area isn’t very oily like other areas of my face, I’ve since switched over to more hydrating formulas like the L’Oréal Paris True Match Eye Cream in a Concealer, 0.5% hyaluronic acid, which has quickly become one of my favorite concealers. It’s an eye cream and concealer hybrid which means that it's hydrating for the delicate skin under my eyes, and it also adds nice, natural coverage which blends well with more natural foundations. I can build this product to get coverage that makes me feel less bothered by my under-eye circles. And, it never looks greasy throughout the day.

Step 4. Only Powder The Most Oil-Prone Areas

I used to powder my entire face which was a real glow-killer. My goal is to look glowy, not greasy. So, I still use powder, but now I apply just a bit of lightweight, translucent powder like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Sweep & Lock Loose Setting Face Powder. I focus it on extra oily areas like the sides of my nose, under my mouth, the center of my forehead and my chin.

Step 5. Warm Up The Cheeks With Blush and Bronzer

Another key to making my skin look radiant is by adding in some color and definition with blush and bronzer. For the fall, I like to go for mauve and berry shades when it comes to my blush. A gorgeous berry option is the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush with Camellia Oil in Berry. It never looks flat thanks to the creamy texture and fine shimmer in the formula. I’ve been on a cream bronzer kick lately too, so I take a slightly dense cheek brush, dip it into my cream bronzer and blend it under my cheekbones, over the bridge of my nose and around my forehead. It adds the perfect warmth and just a little bit of extra glow to my skin.

Step 6. Define The Eyes With Mascara

I love playing around with eyeshadow, but for my everyday work from home look, I often forgo it and opt to make my skin the focal point of my makeup look. But sometimes my makeup just doesn’t feel complete with naked lashes so I apply a volumizing mascara. The L’Oréal Paris Air Volume Mega Mascara, Lightweight Mega Volume Washable has been in my rotation for months. It gives me extreme volume and definition without making my lashes droop like some other volumizing mascaras can.

Step 7. Apply A Fall-Inspired Lipstick Shade

I’ve recently gotten back into wearing lipstick after being loyal to lip gloss for years, and while I’m just not comfortable wearing a super vibrant, bold shade, I do love a shade with a bit of depth to it. In the fall, I like going for earth tones or berry shades. The L’Oréal Paris Les Nus by Colour Riche Intense Nude Lipstick in Nu Extreme is perfect for the fall because it’s neutral with a bit of burnt orange in it. Plus, the Les Nus formula is incredibly pigmented, creamy, and comfortable on the lips. It has a satin finish which I love because it perfectly balances out dewy skin.
