Hate the new smell.

I have been using this shampoo for 13 years. I love what it does for my hair. Now I can no longer use it. I do not like strong smells. I get headaches from them. Now after 13 years have to go find another shampoo because of scent change.

What happened

Used this line for years and loved it! Recently since buying the new bottles I’ve experienced HEAVY hair shedding. Nothing else has changed in my hair routine. Since switching to a whole new brand the excessive shedding has stopped. If the formula was changed, please please please change it back.

New Formula Is a Miss

I have been a loyal user of this product for every bit of 5 years. I have loved it. However, the recent formula change has been devastating. The smell is absolutely awful. At first I thought I’d accidentally grabbed my husband’s body wash because it smells like a man’s scent. Second, it makes my scalp itch in the worst way possible. Lastly, the build up it leaves is insane. I have NEVER had these issues. This is my third try with this new formula thinking maybe they needed time to get it right but I cannot keep using this bottle and will be throwing it out. I am so disappointed as I loved this shampoo/conditioner.

Disgusting Scent. Avoid Product!

The new scent is atrocious, absolutely disgusting in comparison to what it used to be, and my hair feels worse under using this newer shampoo and conditioner.
And trust me, those around you can immediately tell. You’ll have people asking “why did you change shampoos?” even though it should be the same shampoo as always! It’s like using an inferior hair product now! Treat yourself, and find a better product under a different brand.
To put it bluntly, I recommend avoiding L’Oréal until they change it back. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll purchase from them ever again, as it will be a gamble of whether they listened to feedback and the scent is changed back or not.
They’ll respond to our reviews here with a copy and paste message, but nothing will change as long as people buy their products.

This has been my go to shampoo and conditioner for years. I really feel like it helps, but as of late something is different about it. The fragrance of it has most definitely changed and I prefer the original fragrance over whatever this new one is. Really disappointed in the product change, I hope the original comes back.

I do love this shampoo. It works better than my sulfate free shampoo that I haven't touched since I first got a sample of this to try and then bought a bottle of it. 1st thing I noticed was when I used the samples first, I had to double check and make sure I was using the shampoo because I couldn't believe how well behaved and tangle free my hair felt. It felt like a treatment shampoo but unlike anything I have ever used and I have used a ton of products over the years. I have a large basket of hair products sitting there and I chose to use this shampoo. This shampoo is my HG. As for the rest of the line I will review those separately. One little problem is even though this shampoo is wonderful, the extreme hair conditioner is wonderful, regular conditioner in this line not so much, I still don't have enough shine. I do use a leave in and a lightweight oil also from Loreal but I think I have an older version and not the newest version I have seen advertised here on this site. I was trying to get a sample of their glossing system or straight system with no luck. I believe to get the best results with my naturally curly, 1 process coloring now only, and frizziness like crazy I will have to combine this shampoo with the extreme condition which I failed to purchase and bought the regular total 5 conditioner instead and I'm sorry I did. I needed more conditioning than that. But I do recommend highly using this line but make adjustments and your hair may do very well with the conditioner and you may not need the mask. Hoping to get samples like I said because I simply can't invest in more hair care without trying first. SHAMPOO LOVE IT

PLEASE bring back the old formula/scent. This one is so strong and smells like I’m wearing perfume. It’s hard to go to sleep because this smell is overpowering. I don’t understand the change, it’s not a good change. The other reviewers agree on this. Please listen to your customers and make the change back to the old formula. I’ve use this for 10 years and I’m annoyed I have to search for other shampoos and conditioners now.

Used to be amazing…

I have used this shampoo and conditioner religiously since it launched (13 yrs now? maybe longer) and it was truly amazing. Left my hair healthy, nourished and looking and feeling great. I always buy tons at a time and just had to re-stock for the first time this year and I honestly thought I accidentally bought the wrong one the second I put some in my hand. Everything is different. The smell, how it feels in my hair while washing, how it washes out and most importantly - how my hair came out after blow drying. My hair felt dry, damaged and frizzy after using it. And the smell was SO strong - even while I was trying to sleep, every time I woke up in the middle of the night it was all I smelled. I don’t know why they’d ruin such an amazing product. Please bring back the old formula! Based on all the forums I found and reviews I’ve read, everyone seems to be in agreement you guys need to bring the old one back!!

I truly want to thank the makers for bringing such a wonderful product to all of us curly girls. I have three different textures in my hair.and after all of the products that hair taken out my hair,or dried it out,I finally tried this system. I am so thrilled to find that my breaking days have ended.the shampoo paired with the conditioner was just want my hair needed.mosisturized,soft to touch again,and less split ends.i found the rinse out and leaving at walmart,and omgoodness I cried after my results after my trim. I just want to say thank you thank you thank you for caring about us little people.the smell is so phenomenal and crisp,no wonder I get people asking what do I have on.its the system.many couldn't believe it.but I will not switch up my products anymore.i have waited 17 years for the best inexpensive product to use.especially paired with castor oil,my hair has grown tremendously better with more vibrance.we are worth it because you all made it so!!!

Awful reformulation

I’ve used this shampoo and conditioner for nearly ten years—it was the only shampoo and conditioner I bought. It smoothed and strengthened my hair while giving it incredible shine. However, the most recent formulation is absolutely atrocious. It’s drying and makes my hair break and has an overpowering perfume scent. I don’t write online reviews for anything but am so disappointed and sincerely urging/*begging* L’Oréal to bring back the old formula!
I am now looking into new shampoos and conditioners with similar formulations to the old version, while simultaneously trying to buy any old formulation bottles that I can find. Sigh.

Too much added perfume

The new version has a very strong perfume odor. I am sensitive to odors and didn’t think to check the odor level when I saw the new shape of the bottle. I love how it performs on my hair but I now need to find a new shampoo.

Hate the new formula

I used to love this formula and have used it for years. But the new shampoo formula leaves my hair very greasy and my hair has started falling out leaving me with a balding middle part. The smell is bad too. I will have to find a new shampoo now.

Please switch to old formula

I absolutely loved this conditioner, I used it for at least 6 years!!! But….the new formula change has completely ruined it for me. I’ve been to stores trying to buy all of what’s left of the old formula. New formula has changed my hair and the scent is definitely not as pleasant( was the first thing I noticed when I used it for the first time). I think I would only buy the old formula again.

Why did you change the formula & scent L'Oréal??!!
I have been using Total Repair 5 for several months & thought I finally found MY shampoo & conditioner to help my damaged, frizzy, dry hair. My hair was finally growing where I had breakage & I attributed it to THIS shampoo & conditioner. Now you have gone and changed it! It's drying out my hair and the scent is awful! New formula is a disappointment

This has been a favorite for years, now I hate it. The new formula is terrible! Smell is horrible, leaves my hair feeling greasy and weighed down. I really hate the change. I’ll miss this product, but there is no way I can use it now. Please consider going back to the formula everyone loved. From the reviews, I’m not the only one feeling this way.

New fragrance made me sick to my stomach!

I have been purchasing this shampoo and conditioner for as long as it's been in stores. With the new formula, the fragrance has changed to one that is so overpowering that it's made me sick to my stomach and unable to concentrate. I immediately ran out and bought a completely different brand of shampoo to get rid of the smell. I'm so sad to say that as a long time dedicated customer, I'm out. The fragrance is atrocious.

But now this time....it's completely different. I hate this new formula. After 10 years I have had to shop for a different brand. I am disappointed and tired of the changes. Bring Back the Original Formula

I had used the original total 5 shampoo for year and years and years - with this formula change and scent change, I can no longer use and it does not do my hair justice as it used to. I also do not understand changing the formula without noting this to customers, as well as the name change and the scent as well, as similar to others, I find the scent overwhelming and not for me. I no longer recommend this shampoo, conditioner, or hair mask to friends and am now looking for something new, probably not l'oreal

Product with a new formula

I have been buying this product for over 5 years. I recently bought it and to my surprise the smell was so bad and unpleasant that I went to the store to complain because I thought it was spoiled. I went to another store to buy the same product and the unpleasant smell was the same. I investigated and checked several people complained about the same thing. It is very sad to make such profound changes to a product used in everyday life that affects people's lives. I will have to spend money on buying other brands to see if I can adapt to another one.

Utterly disappointed in formula change

I used to adore this shampoo and conditioner, it was my absolute favorite! It made my hair soft and manageable, the scent was perfect. This shampoo and conditioner was the only one I found that really helped detangle/de-frizz my hair. It was very plush and luxurious while applying. Then they changed the formula without warning. I was running low so I purchased two new pump bottles which was both a disappointing mistake and a waste of money (something that has been tight as of late).The scent is overpowering now; quite artificial. The shampoo makes my hair stringy and the conditioner leaves my hair CRISPY!! Somehow the conditioner manages to be greasy and thin while drying my hair out even more. So upset. I thought I had finally found my golden product.

This shampoo used to be fantastic. They must have recently changed it's formula because it smells terrible of perfume and as a person with annoying fragrance irritation I can not used the 2 values size i just bought without swelling up. Womp womp for me I guess but I thought I'd warn others.

Well, after using the Elvive Repairing shampoo and conditioner that I loved for almost 10 years, y’all decided to change the formula and call it Damage Reversing. I guess I will have to go find a new favorite shampoo, unfortunately, because I don’t like the new smell and it just doesn’t seem to work the same. I guess y’all never heard the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” As you can see, Loreal, I’m not the only customer who feels this way. What are y’all going to do about it? Did you recently change the formula? The packaging changed slightly and now the smell is so bad. I tried three times to use it and I am so overcome with such a terrible smell, I can't use it anymore. The smell stays with my hair until I wash it again. I have religiously used this since it first came out. I tried different stores and they all smell the same. I'm truly disappointed.

DISCONTINUED - DISLIKE REPLACEMENT

DISCONTINUED - I thought I had found my forever shampoo. Even "set it & forget it" by ordering on Amazon subscribe & save. At first, I thought I had received a fake product when Damage Reversing showed up in the black bottle. Completely different fragrance, feel and results. Tried multiple stores, same thing. Called L'Oreal and 1st person assured me that it wasn't discontinued, so I wasted almost 2 hours and a gallon of gas driving around. Called again, and they confirmed that it is indeed replaced with Damage Reversing ceramide version. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR OFFICIAL WEBSITE!! Can't believe I spent my day off being furious about shampoo, wasting time and money. Beyond disappointed it is discontinued. Will not be using the replacement as it's completely different and ineffective. Just returned 4 bottles to Amazon.

I have used this product for several years. Up until now, I loved it! Went to the store to purchase more. and to my dismay, found that the base\cap had been changed. It no longer stands up in the shower caddy due to the cap being smaller, It is now top heavy! It also smells terrible! I loved the smell before, now it is a strong perfumy smell. Very disappointed!

Horrible New Scent

Have used this product for years. Have loved it. But the new scent is awful Like a whole bottle of old man cheap cologne was added. I can't use it. And I can't even give it away! No one else wants it either!

Strong odor/makes hair dry

I have used this shampoo for years. It was Absolutely the best over many store and salon brands i purchased. Why the change? Now the scent is over powering. Smells like cologne. I can barely stand it shampooing my hair. I have used my new bottle 3 times. From the first wash I noticed it's considerably dry, even after using the power restore as I always do. Why change a product that worked so well? Will not use anymore, hopefully they haven't changed the entire collection. Purchased the dream lengths, hoping I like it. If not... bye elvive!

New perfume scent too much

I have used your products for years and loved them. But I prefer to smell clean not like I’m using a heavily scented masking coverup spray. I REALLY don’t like the repairing conditioner I used for the first time this morning. My soap, Caress, did the same thing and I’m donating my purchase to charity, never to buy again.
