Facial Cleanser Trend Alert: Micellar Water

Skin Care Concerns

Facial Cleanser Trend Alert: Micellar Water Facial Cleanser Trend Alert: Micellar Water Facial Cleanser Trend Alert: Micellar Water

We know you’ve heard this plenty of times, but it bears repeating: Taking off your makeup before bed with a facial cleanser should be an essential part of your nighttime skin care routine. That’s because sleeping with a full face on can cause a whole slew of complexion issues. Yep: Overnight, that buildup of dirt, makeup, oil, and anything else from the environment that has come into contact with your skin can lead to irritation and even breakouts. Yikes. Luckily, there’s an easy solution that can help make removing even stubborn mascara, eyeliner, and glittery eye shadow a lazy girl’s dream. The answer to your too-tired-to-scrub-off-your-makeup dilemma is micellar water, a facial cleanser that doesn’t require any rinsing. (Just don’t forget to follow up with another skin care productmoisturizer—when you’re done cleansing!)

How Does Micellar Water Work?

Micellar water may look a lot like toner, but it’s totally different type of facial cleanser. Micellar water is actually made up of tiny micelles—oil molecules—that are suspended in water. These teeny-tiny oil bubbles act like magnets, attracting makeup, dirt, and oil off and away from your complexion without ever having to suds up or turn on the sink!

Why Is Micellar Water a Popular Facial Cleanser?

Even though this facial cleanser has only become popular in the United States in the last few years, micellar water has been used by Parisians for a really long time—and for good reason. For starters, micellar water is one of the most convenient types of facial cleansers out there, since you don’t need to be anywhere near a sink to use it. Plus, it’s a multi-purpose facial cleanser—it cleanses skin and removes makeup in just one step. We told you micellar water was a lazy girl’s dream!

How Do You Use Micellar Water?

Micellar water is a super-versatile facial cleanser and can be used in a variety of different ways to suit your needs. Here are a few ways to incorporate it into your skin care routine.

Use micellar water…to remove makeup. Like we said, micellar water is awesome for this. Simply apply some to a cotton pad and then swipe the cotton pad over your skin. On areas where you’re wearing heavier makeup—like your eyes and mouth—you will want to gently press and hold the pad to your face and then wipe away.

Use micellar water…to fix makeup mistakes. Slipped up while doing your cat eye? Dip a cotton swab into a bottle of micellar water to erase any makeup boo-boos so you don’t have to start your look over from scratch.

Use micellar water…to cleanse your skin in the morning—or night. In addition to taking off makeup, micellar water can also be used as a no-rinse facial cleanser. Your face should already be pretty clean when you wake up (since you did remove your makeup before bed, right?), so consider using micellar water in place of a more deep-cleaning facial cleanser in the A.M. It’s quick, gentle, and won’t leave your skin feeling dry. You can use micellar water as a facial cleanser at night, too. Since it’s light and doesn’t strip skin of natural oils, it’s a particularly great option for sensitive skin (although it can work for anyone!).

Use micellar water…to refresh your skin post-workout. One of the coolest things about micellar water is that you don’t need to rinse it off with water. And since it’s important to clean your skin after exercising (the sweat you produce when you work out can mix with oil and clog your pores), toss a bottle in your gym bag and use it after a cardio sweat sesh to help avoid any post-workout breakouts.

How Do You Add Micellar Water to Your Skin Care Routine?

The good news is that micellar water is a suitable facial cleanser for just about anyone—whether you have oily skin, dry skin, or something in between. Choose from one of three micellar water options below, depending on your skin type and needs.

L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof – All Skin Types: Don’t deal with dryness or shine? Then this is the micellar water for you! Gentle on skin, it removes makeup—yes, even the waterproof kind—in one step. Your skin can be clear of dirt and makeup, feel purified, and look hydrated.

L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser – Normal to Dry Skin: Certain facial cleansers and exfoliators can strip skin of moisture, making dry skin even more…well, dry. Not so with micellar water. This particular one will leave skin clean, soothed, and hydrated.

L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser – Normal to Oily Skin: If you have oily skin, over-cleansing or over-exfoliating can strip the skin of moisture you actually do need. But this micellar water won’t do that—it helps remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil in one step, leaving skin purified and looking mattified (a.k.a. less shiny).

To use any of the above facial cleansers, saturate a cotton pad with the micellar water of your choice, then glide it over your face. To remove makeup, hold the cotton pad over closed eyes for a few seconds, then wipe (no rubbing necessary!). Once you’re completely clean, don’t forget to apply a facial moisturizer, since cleansing and moisturizing go together like peanut butter and jelly. Opt for a water-based moisturizer that suits your skin type, like one from the L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius line, which comes in varieties for normal to oily, normal to dry, and extra dry skin.
