This Viral Spoon Hack Will Help You Master Your Makeup Look

Spooning takes on a new meaning in this viral makeup hack!
January 14, 2022

Every so often, there comes a new,
unconventional beauty hack that’s so intriguing, that we need to test it out stat. First, there was using tape to draw the perfect cat eye, then we used socks for heatless curls, and now beauty aficionados on TikTok are turning to spoons to master a cut crease eyeshadow look. And turns out, the eating utensil may just be the newest tool we need to add to our makeup bags this year. Ahead, we break down the viral hack and how to achieve a gorgeous cut crease with a spoon.

What Is The Spoon Makeup Hack?

Creating an intricate eyeshadow look is no easy task as is, let alone doing a cut crease. But using a spoon to achieve the look can definitely be a game-changer for beauty novices. The trick involves horizontally placing a spoon gently against your eyelid and then swiping on your eyeshadow above the spoon’s curve to create a perfectly-defined cut crease. It may seem bizarre to some but it's a fun technique that can make the process easier, just be sure not to have anything sharp around the eyes.

How to Do a Cut Crease With a Spoon

If you’re intrigued by the viral hack, head to your kitchen for a spoon, grab your makeup bag and read on to learn how to do the look yourself in three easy steps.

1. Apply A Primer

After cleansing and washing your face, apply a light layer of eyeshadow primer to your eyelids. This will allow the makeup to go on smoother and lock it in longer, preventing any fading or fallout.

2. Put The Spoon Against Your Eyes

With your eye closed, place the inner side of a clean spoon over your closed eyelid and let the edge of it rest where your socket line is.

3. Apply Eyeshadow

Now for the fun part: Using a fluffy eyeshadow brush, dust on your eyeshadow — the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow singlets are a great option — along the top edge of the spoon, sweeping it back and forth over the crease line. No need to blend too much as a cut crease eyeshadow look is supposed to look bold and have a defined line present. Then, carefully pull the spoon away from your eyes. Coat your lashes using the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Noir Balm Washable Mascara to complete the look.

Editor’s tip: Set your look with the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray and Set Make-Up Oil-Free Setting Spray to keep it in place all day. Be sure to close your eyes and spritz the lightweight formula eight to ten inches away in X and T motions.

How to Overline Your Lips With A Spoon

More recently, beauty influencers have also discovered the technique of using a spoon to overline lips. The idea is that holding the curved edges of the utensil against the lines of your lips provides a fuller pout. Not to mention, it makes over lining your pout a cinch. Here’s how to do the hack yourself.

1. Prep Your Lips

Before reaching for your lip liner and lipstick, make sure to exfoliate your lips first to remove any dead skin cells. The L'Oréal Paris Pure Sugar Resurface & Energize Kona Coffee Scrub is gentle enough to be used on your lips and will leave them looking super smooth. Follow that step by applying a lip primer

Editor’s tip: If you don’t have a lip primer on hand, you can also dab on a bit of foundation or concealer in a pinch.

2. Place The Spoon Against Your Lip Line

Using a clean spoon, put the curved edge of the inner side of the utensil against half of your upper lip. It should be sitting against half of your cupid’s bow to the inner corner of your lip. Take a lip liner, like the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lip Liner, and draw over the top of the spoon. Repeat the step on the other side and your lower lips until your entire pout is lined.

Editor’s tip: It’s important to note that with all hacks there may be challenges. The size and shape of the spoon, combined with your lip shape, will play a major part in how successful you are with this. So you may not want to rely on this hack for a special occasion until you’ve tried it a couple of times.

3. Apply Your Lipstick

Finish off your fuller-lips look with a swipe of your favorite lipstick. We recommend the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lipstick or the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Satin Lipstick because they come in a wide range of stunning colors that look flattering on all skin tones.
