To some, facial oil can seem like a taboo skin care product. However, the reality of it is: Facial oil is something that should be a part of everyone’s skin care routine—no matter their skin type. Keep reading to find out why you should use a facial oil, how to apply one, and how to use one for an at-home facial massage.
Facial oils help provide a youthful glow to the skin. As your skin ages, your natural oil production will decrease. That means that even if you've rarely experienced dry skin in the past, it may become a problem when you get older. If you’ve experienced this, facial oil can help encourage a more luminous glow for your mature skin.
You can apply facial oil in the morning and at night after cleansing and moisturizing. First, cleanse, then apply your moisturizer, and finally smooth on facial oil to seal in moisture. Applying facial oil is pretty simple but we’ve broken it down into two easy steps to ensure you get it right.
Apply four to five drops of facial oil to your fingertips. A little goes a long way with this nourishing skin care product, so don’t assume more is more. Use too much and you’ll risk looking flat-out greasy!
Pay attention to how you apply your facial oil. First, gently smooth the facial oil from your nose to your ears. Then, smooth the oil from your eyebrows to your hairline in an upward motion, going against gravity. Finish applying your facial oil by smoothing it from your neck to your jawline until absorbed.
Editor’s tip: Avoid smoothing oil into your hair. While a facial oil won’t make your face look greasy, it could have an effect on the appearance of your hair.
Facial oil can also be used to give yourself a facial massage. So relaxing! Here’s how to become your own personal masseuse and show your skin the TLC it deserves:
This may not be the step you were expecting to start with, but trust us, it’s important! A facial massage requires your hands quite a bit, so you want them to be squeaky clean. Once you’re as clean as can be, rub a few drops of oil between your palms and move along to the next step.
While the goal is to give yourself a facial massage, starting at your chest and working your way up will give your skin the ultimate glow and extend how long you can pamper yourself for. Use the flats of your hands to massage your oil onto the center of your chest, moving towards your neck as you massage.
Add more oil to your hands if necessary and continuing massaging up your neck and along your jawline.
Instead of rubbing your hands all over your face, target specific areas. Use your fingers to apply the facial oil above your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, and on any other areas you would typically highlight your face. Your face will appear lifted and plumped after you finish with this part of your massage.
To give your eyes a little extra love, use an eye gel to give them a well-deserved massage of their own. Use the rollerball wand of the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Hydra Nutrition Manuka Honey Eye Gel to massage away the look of puffiness, under-eye bags, and dark circles. The ultra-gentle eye gel has a cooling formula with manuka honey and nurturing oils to cushion mature, very dry skin with nourishing moisture. Your eyes will be left looking more youthful and feeling refreshed. The formula is paraben and mineral oil free.
Now that you know what facial oil is all about, it’s time to consider trying a facial serum too. Head over to our article, 4 Reasons to Try Using a Face Serum, to find out why you should treat your skin to one.
