I do struggle with L'Oreal's shampoos itching my scalp but I have to give enormous credit to their Conditioners. They have excellent slip. Whereas other conditioner brands practically yank the hair out of my head from their inability to detangle the after-effects of shampooing, I can almost effortlessly comb the conditioner through my hair in the shower.

It severely aggravates my allergies, makes my eyes itch, stuffs up my nose and gives me a headache. As others have noted, the fragrance lingers long after use and it intensifies when my hair gets damp. Sadly, I'm searching for a fragrance free alternative that, hopefully, works as well as this conditioner. I ran out of conditioner, so I just bought a new bottle this weekend and just use it for the first time this morning. I notice new packaging, but no not notification of any formula changes. Why did you put musky scent in this?!?!! I am extremely sensitive to scents and now cannot use this product anymore. I just hope I don’t have a headache for the rest of the day because I don’t have time to rewash my hair. You should never do that without some kind of notification on the packaging that there is a new formula and or a new scent!

None of the other types in this line does what this particular one does for me. Now the new formula of Total Repair 5 Conditioner is white, which is the only way I knew something had changed as nothing else on the bottle indicates a new formulation, and it does absolutely nothing for my hair. Feels like it rinses right off my hair as if I hadn’t just conditioned it. It’s really just terrible. Why change the formula and use the same bottles and labeling not alert your customers of a change? Did you think we wouldn’t feel the difference? Seems so shady. I’m so so disappointed. Now to hunt for a different brand of shampoo and conditioner to see if I can find anything else that comes close to what the old formula of this did for the health, look and feel of my hair.

It does not condition hair. You have to use a huge amount just to work through your hair, and then it rinses completely away like water. No detangling, softening, or conditioning at all. Such a shame that companies keep cheapening formulas to increase their earnings. I will avoid selecting an alternate conditioner from L’Oréal or any of the 100’s of brands they own, as this is a strategy they employ across many brands/product lines, and it hurts consumers.

I loved it and recommended it all the time. It was by far the best conditioner I had ever used. The new formula (white) is horrible! I am soooooo bummed. I am now on the hunt for a new conditioner. I bought it because it contained ceramides which have awesome benefits for hair. Well compare the new bottle to the old. I knew something was off with my hair and then I checked the bottle and ceramides were gone. Yes there are still some hidden at the very bottom of the ingredients list, but so little that they probably were not allowed to feature it on the packaging any longer. L’Oréal, you really missed the mark in this one. Hope you listen to your consumers because this new product IS VERY DIFFERENT and just a side by side of the new packaging speaks volumes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Jonah from Formerly Amazing, currently highly disappointing I am a long time user of this product; ever since I found it more than 10 years ago it has been a mainstay of my haircare routine, helping keep my afro beautiful and manageable. Unfortunately sometime over the last year the formula changed noticeably, and went from making detangling an easy task to just another average conditioner. Everything about the new formulation is immediately noticeable - the color, consistency, and feeling of the product is nothing like it used to be, the smell has changed (admittedly not the major calculation in choosing/not choosing this product), and the way it feels working through your hair is completely different. As others have said, I too noticed that I used to be able to detangle after simply putting it in but now even after wetting my hair and even pre-conditioning and letting it sit, it is still far less effective than the original formulation. I still have several bottles of the old formula and can clearly tell the difference, and the best way to get the most out of the new formula is to cut in some of the old, but what's the purpose of buying it if I have to do that? Looking at the ingredients list shows clearly the new formula reduced/eliminated several of the ingredients that did the heavy lifting in the original formula, to say nothing of the switch from ceramide to the so-called protein repair concentrate (not a scientist so whether this is a new way of saying ceramide or a cheaper formulation I cannot say, but it certainly doesn't feel like the product contains ceramide anymore). Terrible terrible product as it stands today. If you want something approaching the prior formulation, try the total repair power restore product, which actually, in looking at the ingredients and judging by how it works/feels, seems to be basically the old total repair 5 conditioner formula in a new package that can be sold at a premium. Disappointed in what's happened to a formerly amazing line of products.

I've used it since it came out and absolutely LOVED it, but also notice the new formula absolutely lacks the good conditioning that the old formula provided. Dear L'Oreal, it's NOT that it NO LONGER WORKS for us (see all the responses from you), but it's a completely different product? Now my hair hardly has any split ends its still a work in progress but much better than what it was. And no I haven't trimmed it. My only question and I know that its a stupid one but doesn't hurt to ask, how often should you wash your hair with this product? I do it every three days because I know its not healthy to wash everyday, but it doesn't give you a washing pattern aside from the rinse lather reapeat.

The first time I used it I thought I mistakenly put shampoo in my already shampooed hair. I have a lot of terrible things to say about it but instead I ask-please bring back the old formula. It is a lot of work for a woman with textured hair to find the right daily conditioner. I don’t know if the new formula is due to innovation or budget-but I will pay more money to get the old formula back.

It used to have a yellow color to it and was amazing, nourishing, and super hydrating to my hair. Now it’s an all white color with a harsher scent, and very damaging to my hair that leaves it super dry. It feels like I’m using a styling gel to condition my hair instead of an actual conditioner. I really miss the old formula and will have to start looking for a new conditioner.

As bad as this is to say it goes to show how bad the new formula is, so her goes it’s no better than using the cheapest stuff in the store. Be warned after I used this set (the black bottles) for 1 month & every time I used it large amounts of hair would just fall out, straight from the root. Rated 1 out of 5 by bfs68 from They've changed it. New formula is horrible. Sometime over the last couple of months they changed the formula. The old formula was fantastic; It detangled magnificently and was easy to get a comb through when still wet, and looked great when dry. With the new formula, it barely detangles at all and is very difficult to get a comb through when wet. Huge, huge step backwards, I can't imagine why they did this or who in their right mind thought this was a good idea. They've ruined a once-great product.

I cannot even get it through my hair in the shower without ripping hair out. My hair is frizzy and unmanageable almost like I didn't use any conditioner at all. It is that bad! Please bring back the old formula. This stuff is horrible.

But my newest bottle has a slightly different colored cap, and it's obvious that the formula has changed. Big mistake. Huge. Why do companies mess with things that are working? It's infuriating. Bring back the old formula! I used to tell people to buy this stuff, but no longer!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Mompreneur from Hate the new formula! I have used the Total Repair 5 shampoo/conditioner combo for a very long time and loved it, but the new formula is terrible for my hair! In just two uses, my hair is brittle, tangly, and not shiny. PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD FORMULA!

I have dry curly hair, and I blow dry and straighten it 9 months out of the year and wear it curly in summer. I have extremely hard water too, so my hair gets a beating. I have tried tons of different repairing products, but none even compare to the results I got with ONE USE of this stuff. Absolutely the best. Highly recommend this. I will be using it regularly going forward!! Thank you L’Oréal! You saved my hair problems!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Erin10 from Love this conditioner! I want to preface this review by stating that I have wavy/loose curls that I have determined are likely type 2B-2C. I do not wash my hair everyday. I COWASH about 2 times/week and shampoo/condition once or twice a month. I just happened to receive this product right around my normal shampoo time so I used my normal shampoo and swapped out my regular conditioner for this one. To begin, this product has a VERY strong perfumed smell. I was not used to it because I use natural products with little to no added perfumes. This was like a kick to the nose in the shower but I definitely appreciated it over the next few days because the smell stuck. I even found myself sniffing my hair throughout the day! Personally, I enjoy the smell although others may not. As for it's claims on fixing damaged hair I can say that it made my hair RIDICULOUSLY soft immediately after washing. I think it would take more time to tell if it "repaired split ends" and such. I still have split ends but i like that it made my hair silky soft and manageable. Overall I would recommend this product and I am going to add this conditioner to my hair routine now!

I do like it being paraben and sulfate free as I don't use an product that contains those. Overall, I'd say if you're on a budget this would be a good choice.

Drugstore brands usually leave my hair dry and tangled to the point I cannot even run a comb through it. This conditioner leaves my hair silky and smooth. Totally combable after my shower. My hair feels and looks wonderful. This conditioner really surprised me with its quality. I will be purchasing the matching shampoo to see how the duo work together. I may have found a new alternative.
