7 Skin Treatments We Keep Hearing About

Take your skin care to the next level.
January 17, 2020

If radiant, glowing skin is your ultimate goal then you likely take your skin care game pretty seriously. Chances are, you’ve already fine-tuned a skin care routine that suits your needs, but are you aware of the various skin care treatments that can give your complexion a little extra oomph? And as of late, there are a number of skin care treatments—including skin tightening treatments and skin treatments for acne and acne scars—that are on everyone’s lips and timelines.

Depending on what skin care concerns you’re dealing with, the right treatment can transform your skin right before your eyes. If you’re ready to explore the wonders of the skin treatments that are currently trending, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading for seven skin care treatments that are worth learning about.

Skin Treatment #1: Microneedling with PRP

While the thought of microneedling may freak you out a bit (we don’t blame you), there are myriad benefits that may make you reconsider. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) shares that microneedling is the process of puncturing the skin with thin needles to create tiny wounds that boost the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. As a result, collagen production is stimulated, which helps to give the skin a smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking appearance.

Now, we’re seeing this process combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy which uses the patient’s own platelets (taken from their blood) to help accelerate collagen and elastin production, smooth fine lines and increase radiance. Keep in mind that this treatment can be costly and like any treatment, results will vary from patient to patient.

Skin Treatment #2: Dermaplaning

This exfoliation treatment has often been touted as an alternative to shaving. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it’s done using a handheld instrument called a dermatome which resembles a surgical blade. Dermaplaning removes hair and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, leaving you with a smooth visage. It produces tighter skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and scars. Patients have praised the treatment for also clearing the way for skin care products, allowing them to penetrate the skin better, thus being more effective.

Skin Treatment #3: Microdermabrasion

If an uneven skin tone has you feeling down, microdermabrasion may be just what you need. Another form of exfoliation, microdermabrasion is a treatment that, according to the Cleveland Clinic, resurfaces skin to help with the appearance of fine lines, dull skin, brown spots, mild acne scars, age spots, and sun damage. The treatment itself involves tiny crystals being sprayed onto the skin and doesn’t require any downtime.

Skin Treatment #4: Dermabrasion

Taking things a step further than microdermabrasion, the Cleveland Clinic states that dermabrasion is a powerful resurfacing technique that involves using a high-speed rotary instrument that sands the outer layers of skin. This treatment helps to minimize the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles while working to smooth and balance your complexion.

Skin Treatment #5: Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is another way to treat your skin care concerns. According to the Mayo Clinic, this procedure helps to improve the overall appearance of your skin by lightening the appearance of acne scars and minimizing fine lines. Laser resurfacing can be done with ablative lasers or nonablative lasers, for a more gentle approach. Like other skin care treatments, laser resurfacing may not be suitable for your skin type, so be sure to check in with your dermatologist to see what will work for you—advice that applies to all of the treatments mentioned above and below.

Skin Treatment #6: Light Therapy

For people struggling with acne, light therapy can be an effective treatment to help diminish breakouts and keep them at bay. The Mayo Clinic states that the bacteria that causes the redness and swelling that accompanies acne can be killed by exposing the skin to different types of light (typically blue light, red light or a combination of both). Pulse light and heat energy can also kill acne bacteria, as per the Mayo Clinic, and these skin treatments for acne can be effective in shrinking oil glands.

Skin Treatment #7: Chemical Peels

Chemical peels used to get a bad rap, with assumptions made that they’ll leave skin red and raw. While that’s certainly possible, gentler peels have become one of the most popular skin care treatments. Per the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), a chemical peel can help diminish visible signs of aging like lines and wrinkles and reveal a brighter complexion and smoother skin.

Peels are available in a variety of intensities, which is what will dictate how your skin looks afterward, how long healing will take, and what sort of chemical peel aftercare you’ll need. If you’re interested in a professional peel, your dermatologist can walk you through all of this and help you determine which type of chemical peel is right for you.

Of course, you can also experience the magic of a chemical peel of sorts in the comfort of your own home. This DIY option is not quite the same as a professional procedure, but you can test out the trend with glycolic acid peel pads. Try the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Bright Reveal Brightening Daily Peel Pads, which help resurface dull, uneven tone and rough texture to reveal youthful-looking skin.
