What Is Micellar Shampoo

By now you’ve likely heard of micellar water — a popular, gentle, no-rinse cleanser and makeup remover. But chances are, you may not be as familiar with micellar shampoo. And if you ask us, it’s a product formulation that deserves more love and attention.

If you’re curious about the benefits of micellar shampoo and whether or not it should become part of your hair care routine, keep reading. We consulted with Madison Godesky, Ph.D., Head of Scientific Communications for L’Oréal Paris to share what you need to know about micellar shampoo.

What Is Micellar Shampoo?

Micellar shampoo is a liquid formula that contains micelles — a group of surfactant molecules contained in liquid —  which work as cleansing agents.

“A micelle has properties that enable it to interact with both watery molecules as well as lipid-like molecules,” says Godesky.

Micelles are often referred to as being amphiphilic, meaning they’re attracted to both water and lipid molecules, also known as fatty acids or oils. Essentially, micellar shampoo uses micellar technology in which the surfactants, or cleaning agents, are contained within liquid bubbles. Those bubbles act like a magnet to lift and draw out impurities.

How Is Micellar Shampoo Beneficial for Hair?

Because micellar shampoo is amphiphilic, both water-loving and oil-loving, it works to break down both water-based debris such as dirt and pollution, as well as oil-based impurities such as sebum and product buildup. While this holds true for traditional shampoo formulas too, micellar shampoos, like the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls No Build-Up Curls Micellar Shampoo, tend to be more gentle.

“What makes [micellar shampoo] gentle is that within the same molecule, it’s really balanced and can dissolve both the oils and the watery components,” explains Godesky. “This is what makes it not overly aggressive on oils or overly aggressive on water.” It effectively cleanses each type of debris without being too harsh on either kind.

Who Is Micellar Shampoo Best For?

Micellar shampoo is a great option for anyone looking to give their hair a nice cleanse without being too stripping. This type of formula is great for people with fine hair because it’s extremely lightweight and won’t weigh down your strands. It’s also an excellent option for people with dry hair because, again, micellar formulas tend to be non-stripping.

The Elvive Dream Lengths Curls No Build-Up Curls Micellar Shampoo in particular is great for those with curly hair. The formula is gentle, so it won’t rid the scalp of necessary natural oils — and the pointed nozzle on the bottle is great for getting to the roots and distributing product right onto the scalp.

Although it’s a gentle formula, it does an excellent job at giving the scalp a deep clean and removing stubborn buildup. If you’re someone with curly hair that washes infrequently, it’s a great option for you because it can work just like a gentle clarifying shampoo.

The same is also true for you if you have very oily hair. If you deal with excess oil, this formula is great because it works to dissolve oil-based impurities to give your hair and scalp a deep clean.

How to Use the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls No Build-Up Curls Micellar Shampoo

If you’re new to using micellar shampoo, follow these simple steps below to add it to your hair care routine.

1. Wet Your Hair

Just like with traditional shampoo formulas, the first step is to thoroughly wet your hair and scalp.

2. Apply It At Your Roots

Untwist the nozzle at the top of the bottle to allow the product to flow. Then, press the nozzle onto your scalp in back and forth motions to even distribute the formula throughout your head.

3. Massage Into Your Scalp

Once you’ve dispersed the formula onto your scalp, use your fingers or a scalp brush to work in the product. Massage your scalp in circular motions to help break up excess oil and impurities. You’ll notice that the formula creates a very soft foam. Once you have foam all over your scalp, you can rinse your hair.

4. Follow Up With Conditioner

After cleansing, it’s important to follow up with conditioner to add back necessary moisture. Apply the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Moisture Seal Conditioner to the lengths of your hair and detangle any knots with your fingertips or a comb before rinsing.

5. Apply Leave-In Conditioner

If you have curly hair add the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Non-Stop Dreamy Curls Leave-in Conditioner to your curls, on wet or dry hair. It works to moisturize your hair and define your curl pattern for softer, bouncier curls.
