Just say no to scalp sunburns.
June 10, 2022Less is usually more when it comes to summer, whether that means less clothes or fewer steps in your skin care routine. But when it comes to your scalp and hair, you might need to be doing a little more in the warmer months to keep it healthy. Whether you have a dry scalp or suffer from frequent scalp sunburn, read on, as we’re sharing everything you need to know about taking care of your scalp during the summer.
If your scalp routine only consists of shampooing and conditioning, that’s about to change. Here are four tips to follow for taking care of your scalp.
Just like our skin, the scalp can produce more oil in warm, humid temperatures. If you’re looking to clear your scalp of excessive oil, we recommend the use of a scalp scrub — like the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Scalp Care + Detox Scrub. It contains apricot seed and menthol to remove buildup on the scalp, including oil and impurities.
Getting a sunburn is common if you’ve spent all day on the beach (especially without protection), but getting one on your scalp can be extra painful. To protect your scalp from harmful UV rays, Colombini says wearing a hat is a tried and true method. He also recommends using hair care products that contain UV filters for extra protection, such as the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Simply Clean Shampoo with Essential Oil and L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Simply Clean Conditioner with Essential Oil.
It may seem backwards, but having a dry scalp can actually cause oily strands. This also happens in the skin — the sebaceous glands can produce excess sebum when the skin is dehydrated. If you’ve noticed that your scalp is dry but your hair is oily, you might need to use a more hydrating hair care system.
Try the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Hyaluron Plump Hydrating Shampoo, Paraben-Free and the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Hyaluron Plump Hydrating Conditioner, Paraben-Free, which contain hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture in the hair.
If your roots get oily throughout the week, keeping a dry shampoo on hand can always treat the problem quickly. Reach for the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate Free Tinted Dry Shampoo for Brown Hair if you have dark hair or the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Tinted Dry Shampoo for Blonde Hair if you have lighter tones.
But, note that this is only a temporary fix. “Dry shampoos definitely help,” says Colombini. “However, let’s make sure we are using the appropriate products first that will reinforce a healthy scalp.”
