A style that’s worth every cent.

It might feel, at times, like it’s hard to keep up with all the latest when it comes to hair color trends. After all, there are so many haute hair colors to choose from, and when a new season rolls around it’s easy to get that itch to switch things up. One of our favorite hair trends is the money piece, for its face-framing highlights that mimic the natural, lived-in look of balayage hair color. Since it only involves coloring the front pieces of your hair, the money piece is one of the easier trends to try if you’re still on the fence about color or maintenance.

This season, one quick scroll through your social media feeds might reveal that the rainbow money piece is hot for fall. Read on to find out more about this hair color style, how to get it, and how you can test it out at home before you commit to the look.

What Is A Rainbow Money Piece?

The rainbow money piece is a hair color that involves highlighting or coloring just a few pieces of hair at the front to frame your face. Instead of one singular color, it includes several hues that create a rainbow look.

“Think of a ribbon, as in the look of the highlighted pieces creates a ribbon effect,” says Jonathan Colombini, celebrity hair stylist and L’Oréal Paris expert. “The piece in the front is the most important. It brightens the face and naturally the pieces in the front tend to [catch the] light in the sun.”

While blonde or light brown money piece hair color might blend into your hair to create a more natural gradient, rainbow money piece highlights are meant to really stand out. The style is unabashedly bold and adds a lot of spice to your mane. It’s for those who want to really have fun with their look and indulge in a plethora of bright hues with their tresses.

How To Get Rainbow Money Piece Highlights

Since money piece highlights can be difficult to do on your own if you’re not a hair color professional, Colombini advises that you go see your colorist to get the look.

“If the piece in the front or the ribbon money piece gets too wide by placing too many foils, it loses the natural look,” he advises. The same thing goes for the less natural-looking rainbow money piece—placement is everything. “Do not ever attempt this on your own. There is far too much room for error doing this yourself!”

While the experts say that you shouldn’t try to create a money piece on your own, there are ways that you can experiment with the rainbow money piece before making it permanent. Grab the L’Oréal Paris Colorista Hair Makeup Temporary 1-Day Hair Color Spray in several shades, including hot pink, blue, purple, pastel mint and red and give the front of your hair a temporary hair color makeover. This easy-to-use temporary hair color spray is for all hair types and washes out with just one shampoo. So you can test the waters with rainbow hair without drowning in regret if you don’t love it.
