How to Use an Eyebrow Razor

August 07, 2020

Let’s be honest: There’s just something about well-sculpted brows that frame your face beautifully. While you may rely on waxing, plucking, or eyebrow makeup to achieve gorgeous brows, there is another way to bring your perfectly sculpted arches to life sans the fuss. We’re talking about using an eyebrow razor.

Placing a razor anywhere near your brows may sound risky, but it’s much easier than you think, and the results are definitely worth it. Of course, you’ll want to learn more about eyebrow shavers before taking one to your arches. Follow along to get the lowdown on eyebrow razors, including how to use this handy tool.

WHAT IS AN EYEBROW RAZOR?

An eyebrow razor is different from the razor you would use to shave your legs or a beard. You don’t want to get anything quite so large near your brows, as it’s a recipe for overdoing it. A brow razor is a smaller beauty tool that features a blade at the top with a long, curved handle, and it’s meant specifically for shaving your brows. Typically available with rectangular or square-shaped blades, you can find eyebrow shavers of various sizes to help you make your eyebrow maintenance as seamless as possible.

ARE EYEBROW RAZORS SAFE TO USE?

Shaving your eyebrows may sound like a recipe for disaster, but this tool is super-safe to use. As with many beauty tools and devices, as long as you use an eyebrow razor the right way, you shouldn’t have an issue. Really, the best thing about brow razors is that if you can’t stand the pain that comes with waxing and tweezing, shaving eyebrows is a pain-free alternative.

HOW TO USE AN EYEBROW RAZOR

Ready to work your way to gorgeous eyebrows? Follow our step-by-step tutorial to transform into an eyebrow razor expert.

STEP #1: RELAX

The most important thing for you to do is relax. Since you’re using an eyebrow shaver to shape your brows, there is no room for jitters. Shake off the nerves and focus on creating a gorgeous set of brows.

STEP #2: CLEANSE YOUR SKIN

Next, you’ll want to make sure that you cleanse your skin properly. Follow your go-to skin care routine, so you can work on a fresh set of brows. This is also a must because you don’t want to risk the spread of bacteria, which can cause blemishes to occur.

STEP #3: BRUSH YOUR BROWS

Using a spoolie, kick things off by brushing your eyebrows upward and outward.

STEP #4: DETERMINE YOUR BROW SHAPE

For brows that frame your face perfectly, you’ll first need to determine your face shape. This will give you a clear indication of how to shape your eyebrows. To make things simple, place an eyebrow pencil vertically at the side of the top of your nose, and create a mark. Next, align the pencil with the outside of your iris and mark it along your brow to define your arch. Now it’s time to focus on the tail of your eyebrows. Line your pencil up with the outer corner of your eye and make another small mark.

Editor’s note: Keep in mind, you won’t have to go through this process every single time you shave your eyebrows. Once you’ve defined your shape once, if you don’t let it get out of hand, you’ll be able to super easily clean up stray hairs with your brow razor without mapping out the entire shape. Laying this groundwork the first time, however, is essential.

STEP #5: OUTLINE YOUR BROWS

Now, it’s time to create an outline for your brows. This step will help you identify which areas you need to shave. Using a brow pencil, connect the dots you made on the last step to create an outline.

STEP #6: REACH FOR FACIAL OIL

You’ll need to apply a tiny amount of facial oil around your brows to allow your eyebrow razor to glide smoothly over your skin. If your outline gets smudged, trace over it again.

STEP #7: SHAVE THE UPPER AREA OF YOUR BROWS

With your outline in place, hold the skin around your eyebrows taut and sweep your eyebrow razor in small strokes going in the same direction as the hair growth. This will reduce the chance of any nicks or cuts on your skin. It's also important to remember that there is no need to rush. Slow and steady always wins the race with your beauty routine. Once the upper area of your brows is done, wipe off the eyebrow razor using a paper towel.

STEP #8: GROOM UNDERNEATH YOUR BROWS

Use the eyebrow shaver and slowly shave any stray hairs under your brows. Be sure to use small strokes for an easy process.

STEP #9: FOCUS BETWEEN YOUR BROWS

It’s time to switch gears and remove the hairs between your brows. This is key when the goal is to sport clean and well-groomed eyebrows. Holding your eyebrow razor at an angle, slowly remove any hairs from the area.

STEP #10: ADMIRE YOUR HANDIWORK

Once your brows are nicely shaped, make sure that your eyebrows look even. If you find any stray hairs, simply shave those, too, or pluck them with tweezers.

STEP #11: SEAL THE DEAL

Congratulations, you’ve made it to the finish line! Saturate a cotton swab with a makeup remover, like the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof – All Skin Types, and wipe your brows until clean. Use a spoolie to brush your brows into place, and your work is done.

DO EYEBROWS GROW BACK AFTER SHAVING?

If you’re worried that your eyebrows may never grow back after shaving, there’s no need to panic. Just as the hair on your legs and other areas of your body grows back after shaving, your eyebrows will do the same. Typically, it takes six to eight weeks for your eyebrows to grow back fully. Remember, everyone’s hair grows at a different rate. Some people may see their eyebrows grow back faster than others.
