Some signs of skin aging are inevitable, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take a few steps of your own to delay their development and preserve your youthful looks. You can also help minimize the appearance of existing fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of skin aging by following a few anti-aging skin care tips as a part of your regular routine. So, take care of your beautiful skin today so that you can reap the rewards in the years to come.
#1: Apply sunscreen every day. No matter the season, it’s important to protect your beautiful skin from the sun’s harmful rays. If left unprotected day after day or year after year, your skin could develop some signs of skin aging, like wrinkles and age spots, prematurely. Try to find skin care products like moisturizers, cosmetics and lip balms that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. If you already have a few lines, wrinkles or age spots, it’s never too late to start protecting your skin. Regularly applying SPF with broad spectrum protection can help to slow down the deepening of wrinkles and darkening of existing spots – not to mention keep new signs of skin aging from forming.
#2: Eat and drink with your skin in mind. To preserve your youthful-looking, beautiful skin for the years ahead, think about introducing more antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies into your diet. Avocados, berries, dark leafy green vegetables, pineapples and tomatoes are antioxidant powerhouses. Drinking plenty of water throughout your day can also help to hydrate your skin on an intrinsic level, so that it is a bit less likely to become dry and dull-looking.
#3: Don’t forget to exfoliate. One factor that can make even those with youthful skin look older: Skin dullness. When youthful, glowing skin is replaced by a lackluster complexion, it can make you appear older than you actually are. Slough away old, dead skin layers that contribute to this look of dullness to reveal fresher, younger-looking, beautiful skin beneath. You can exfoliate using a chemical method, which are typically formulated with AHAs and BHAs like glycolic, salicylic acid, LHA and lactic acid. Or, you can use a mechanical method like a facial scrub or textured wipes; typically, up to two to three times a week.
#4: Find time to rest, relax and reenergize. When you are stressed and tired, your skin can look how you feel. Frequent muscle movement, like frowning when you are stressed can contribute to the development of some lines and wrinkles. A lack of sleep can also cause a rise in the cortisol- stress hormone, which can have a negative impact on your skin. When you sleep, your skin’s recovery is at its highest, most effective potential. So, try to turn in early when you can and make a habit out of practicing relaxing breathing techniques before bed. Also, try to work in some time to exercise two to three times a week, endorphins that are released while working out can help to reduce stress in your body, and in turn your skin too.
#5: Look for more than one way to hydrate your skin. Dry skin is more likely to show fine lines and wrinkles early on, compared to those with moisturized skin. So for youthful-looking skin, think beyond simply using a face cream and try working in some other moisturizing skin care products into your routine. Layer hydration on a daily basis by first applying a lightweight serum under your day and night cream. Also, consider trying hydrating face mask formulas two to three times a week to surge your skin with an extra dose of moisture. You can also try swapping out your night cream for a nourishing overnight face mask a few nights a week for even more added hydration.
Take a few simple anti-aging steps forward to help preserve your youthful-looking skin for longer. Protect and nourish it so that you’ll not only feel great, but love how your skin looks too.
