How to Wear a Flower Crown this Spring

March 29, 2019

Spring is officially in full bloom—and the season has us feeling oh so floral. Whether you’re more of a festival girl or a fairy chic chick, adding a floral crown to any beauty look can take it from tame to trendy. Embrace the flower power this season and procure your spot as queen bee, simply by adorning yourself with a few flowers. Whether you have wavy hair, straight hair, or anything in between, you can easily add this hair accessory to your look. Here, learn how to wear a flower crown with different hair types and hairstyles. Plus, read until the end for our DIY flower crown tutorial so you can make a flower crown of your own!

HOW TO WEAR A FLOWER CROWN WITH WAVY HAIR

Natural-looking waves + floral crown = a totally boho vibe. Give your hair body and motion by adding waves, then finish things off with a tulip tiara. No more shrinking violet—you’ll surely make waves with this style.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Apply mousse

Work a few pumps of mousse through the lengths and ends of your hair to help give your strands some bounce. Try the L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Volume Inject Mousse, which also provides heat protection and will serve as the perfect prep for your next step.

Step 2: Make waves

Use a curling wand to help create shape. Wrap pieces of hair around the barrel and alternate between curling toward and away from your face for better blending.

Step 3: Finger comb curls

Once you’ve allowed your waves to cool, drag your fingers through them to break up tighter coils and get a more natural, piece-y look.

HOW TO WEAR A FLOWER CROWN WITH STRAIGHT HAIR

For a style that will look completely ethereal when coupled with a crown, go super-straight. No crimps or kinks—just silky, sleek hair. When topped off with a touch of floral festiveness, this style will be transformed into a stunning springtime look.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Use a heat protectant

Completely straight strands tend to require heat styling your hair, so make sure to kick things off by spraying your hair with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Iron Straight Heatspray.

Step 2: Straighten your hair

Run a flat iron through your dry strands, pulling pieces taut. Continue flat ironing until your tresses are strikingly smooth.

HOW TO WEAR A FLOWER CROWN WITH AN UPDO

Every little girl fancies fairytales and dreams of becoming a princess. It’s a fantasy you may have given up on with age, but that’s no reason not to indulge in a pixie vibe every once in a while. Make a polished bun the base for your crown and voila—enchanted elegance.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Make a ponytail

Gather all of your hair as if creating a high pony.

Step 2: Bend into a bun

Twist your hair into a spiral, wrapping it around the base of your ponytail.

Step 3: Secure with a hair tie

Use a strong hair elastic to keep your bun in place.

HOW TO WEAR A FLOWER CROWN WITH BRAIDS

Nip boring braids in the bud by decorating with a floral headpiece. Style your hair in two fishtail braids for a mane that can withstand music festival life—and leave you photo-op ready.

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Spritz with a texturizer

Apply a texturizing spray, such as the L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Air-Blown Texture Mist, to help add grit before you start styling.

Step 2: Section off hair

Split hair into two sections, pulling each section in front of your shoulders. Split each of those sections in two.

Step 3: Braid

Focus on one half of your head. Take a piece of hair from the outside edge of one section and add it to the inside edge of the other. Keep adding pieces from one section to the other, swapping back and forth until you’ve reached the end of your hair.

Step 4: Repeat

Braid the hair on the opposite side of your head.

Step 5: Add elastics

Tie off the ends with invisible clear elastics.

Step 6: Gently pull apart

Strategically tug at your braids for an undone, tousled appearance.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR FLOWER CROWN IN PLACE

Give your new style the royal treatment by properly affixing your horticultural halo. Start by spraying a few bobby pins with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Lock It Bold Control Hairspray to give them some extra grip. Then, insert the pins into your hair with the grooved side facing down, making sure they’re holding onto both a piece of hair and a part of the crown. Now, your crowning glory won't be going anywhere!

HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER CROWN

Don’t want to purchase a flower crown? No problem, you can make your own—and it’s easier and more fun than it sounds! Here’s our DIY flower crown tutorial:

What you’ll need:

Thin floral wire

Scissors

Floral tape

Greenery

Faux or fresh flowers

Create a flower crown by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Shape the wire

First off, you want to shape the floral wire into a perfectly round circle that will sit on your head just the way you like it. To find the best fit, you can take the wire and literally wrap it around your head, then connect the ends by twisting the wires together.

Step 2: Wrap tape around the ends

Using your floral tape, wrap a bit around the twisted ends to better secure your crown. This will also help ensure the ends of the wire don't end up poking you in the head!

Step 3: Trim your greenery and florals

Grab your scissors and cut your flowers down so that only about one inch of the stem is left.

Step 4: Assemble!

Now, you’re ready to put your crown together! Working piece by piece, attach the flowers and greenery onto your wire crown individually, using the floral tape to secure each stem. Lay the stems flat against the wire, then wrap the tape around each one until it’s secure. Do this the entire way around the crown.

That’s it! Now, you’re ready to rock your very own flower crown.

Next, consider adding a bit of glitter to your beauty look, too! It's only fitting, seeing as glitter is another embellishment that's fit for both festivals and fairies! For one of our favorite ways to get glitzy, check out our article, Festival Makeup Spotlight: How to Do Glitter Brows.
