I luvd the color.. it covered my grays well. I used 5N natural brown.. jus the colour felt a little dark then mentioned on the box.. may b i’ll go for 1 lighter shade next time.

Very Disappointed. Hair is almost black.

The color on the box is very misleading. I have used other L'Oreal hair dye products and have always been very happy with the results. I wanted to try anothe L'Oreal product. I used 5N and my hair looks almost black. It was a light to medium brown before I dyed it. I will never use the L'Oreal color preference again and will not recommend to anyone.

We know how disappointing it can be to look forward to a new application of color only to find that your results are not what you expected. There are many reasons why haircolor results can come out too dark. Once you have color-treated hair, we suggest following the touch up application method to achieve optimal results. Otherwise, by doing full head application, due to the porosity of the color-treated hair, you are left with a haircolor result that is much darker than intended. The color will fade as you shampoo. We appreciate the feedback which will be shared with others in our company.

I LOVE this product

I used 6N - natural light brown. I've used Excellence & Preference before, but this was the first time I saw the Nudes collection. I love everything about it. It smelled great, I love the shampoo and conditioner. (I wish they'd sell that separately) My natural color is lt. brown with about 30% gray. This covered my grays well, except a few at my temple, but that looks natural. My hair turned out only slightly darker than light brown. I've been coloring my hair for decades. I know that I always need to use a color lighter than what I want. To get light brown, I usually have to use dark blonde. Not just with Loreal, with other brands as well. If my hair comes out too dark, I found using Head and Shoulders Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo lighten it within 2 or 3 washes but doesn't damage my hair like color removers do. I intend to keep using this product - my hair feels softer than when I used products with ammonia.

BEST hair colour I've used

I picked up shade 4N at my local box store and OMG. BEST hair colour I've ever used!! Easy to apply, the shampoo and conditioner are great, and the results are long lasting! I used this product nearly 2 months ago, and despite lots of time in the lake swimming, out in the sun enjoying summer I'm just NOW noticing a few greys popping thru. Will for sure buy again!

Changed Formula

I was buying the U6, perfect color , U is the only one that is a 6’or 7 that doesn’t pull dark on my light brown hair. They have stopped making U but put the U7 picture on the N7 box. This is nowhere near the same color effect. Turned my hair way too dark. I am now shopping different company. Too bad as I have been a Loreal purchaser for a long time.

Turned my hair BLACK. Did a strand pretest. Applied all over as per instructions since I was going darker. Left on 20 minutes. My hair was a very light brown before. And my hair WAS in good shape. Always had good luck with L’Oreal in the past. Have been going to a salon for years, but liked the look of this color so decided to give it a try. What a MISTAKE .Saw that others had the same experience. Bad batch?? Have washed my hair at least 30 times and barely a medium tone now . In the past, I had dyed my hair many many times I and have never had such an experience. Know that this was not a fault of mine.I’m in my 60s and it really makes me look washed out. Lost my faith in L’Oreal. very unhappy.

I purchased this with the hope of coloring my gray and having a safer alternative to the smell of the original color excellence. I tried it 2x with the second being a longer sit time and still my gray on the front and sides of my hair are still gray. The original color excellence would cover all gray with no issues. Almost feel like I spent more on the color excellence universal only to find that it did not do what I was expected.i just hope the rest of my hair has coverage as I don’t have time to record my hair

Flat color, came out too dark

This came out way TOO DARK. I have gray roots and usually medium brown hair that tends to get brassy with boxed hair dye. I have found that light brown doesn’t cover my roots as well (they come out lighter than the rest of my hair) so I went with Natural Brown. I purchased this formula because of the “universal” effect having ash in it and the color looked multidimensional. However! This hair color is quite flat and again way too dark. I gave two stars because the application was simple and went well. I like that it came with not just a conditioner but also a gentle shampoo. There was no unpleasant odor. One of the gloves ripped but I always have extra on hand. I might try a shade lighter when it’s time to refresh my color, but I am apprehensive!

Best box dye for a natural color!

I have had gray hair since I was 18 and I am now 40+ I have had trouble finding colors that aren't too red or gold because it comes off as a weird orangey brown. The color I used is 2N Soft Black, which is what I always used in other Loreal hair dyes (although I will likely try 4N next time because this is just a tad too dark, but not bad for winter!) and it covered every bit of my gray. I even took off 5 minutes from my all over color time and it still worked great. Please keep this product around forever!

I have used this product for years. I switched to the non ammonia about 6 months ago. I have been happy every time except this last time. I used the Natural Copper 7NR and both boxes had super dark BROWN dye that just got darker and darker...not at all red. I've been dying my hair red with other brands for 10+ years and never had any issues. This was the first and last timeI tried this dye.

Don’t waste your time or money

I’ve been using L’Oréal Excellence and Preference since 1991 since going prematurely gray. Have tried many other brands over the years, but always come back to these. In the past 4 years I’ve been trying many other non ammonia products for gray coverage. None are the greatest to be honest. Garnier Olia is a solid choice, just know it would not be perfect grey coverage. Then I found this new non ammonia product by L’Oréal and thought I found my holy grail, was excited to try it. After using for the first time today, I’m never buying it again. Complete waste of money and my time. I have light brown, fine hair and it absolutely did NOTHING to cover my grey. Now I will have to buy the olia product and redye my hair all over again. Don’t waste your time.

Not 100% gray coverage

While this color was beautiful on my non gray hair strands it failed to cover any gray at all. After contacting L’Oréal I was told since it’s ammonia free that it may not cover it. If that’s true then you need to remove the statement from the front of the box that says 100% gray coverage as it’s misleading. I bought the 8N in Universal Nudes and was told after to buy Preference Creme. The 8N in that line is not the same which is disappointing.

7N did a very poor job of covering white roots. 80% of white roots still show. Universal nudes does not appear to be a good product for covering white roots in the lighter shades.

Great for covering the grey hairs

The shade was perfect and very easy to apply. It did not have a strong odor and did not dry my hair out like most products would. The color is subtle and long lasting.

Good quality I have always used L’Oréal hair dye. It has always been a good choice to use to do my roots when I don’t have time to go to the hair salon.

Long lasting for grey!

Packaging, shade was fine. It wasn’t the right tone for my application but I applied it to someone else and they loved it. Would recommend! The scent is like any other coloring product.

Definitely would buy again as I already have. I’m usually one to go get my hair highlighted but due to financial issues I’m not able to do that so I’ve been going to my natural color

The description really does do what it says. I really like this product. I continue to buy it several times after I got it to try through influencer. It does not have a strong scent, which is really nice. It doesn’t burn. The color is exactly like they say and you get everything you need in the box I suggest if you’re gonna have long hair doing this, you get two boxes. My grey does come back fast, but I don’t think that it’s the product. It’s my hair It grows pretty fast. I think that’s the problem with that not the product.

Not my color

I've been coloring my hair at home for years, using a similar level 5 color. I tried the universal nudes 5N natural brown. I followed the directions exactly. What I liked is my hair didn't feel very dry after, it felt nice. What I didn't like is the color it's nothing close to what the box describes. My hair is almost black, way to dark. I tried washing the next morning with my vitamin c Shampoo that usually pulls color from the hair and it made zero difference (I guess that could be considered a good thing). Now I'm going to have to spend more money on a color remover and another box of color.

We know how disappointing it can be to look forward to a new application of color only to find that your results are not what you expected. There are many reasons why haircolor results can come out too dark. Once you have color-treated hair, we suggest following the touch up application method to achieve optimal results. Otherwise, by doing repeat full head applications, due to the hair's porosity, you are left with a haircolor result that is much darker than what you intended. Using a clarifying shampoo will help release the color. If you have any additional questions or would like to speak with one of our haircolor experts directly, please reach back out!

Not Too Shaby For Boxed Hair Dye! 👩🏽‍🦱

I’ll be honest it took a while to do this product review. When I received this product I had my hair professionally colored. Six months later, after my gray roots really grew in I gave this a chance. The formula is so nice, no nasty smell that you would typically get from a boxed hair dye, and the color pigment payoff to cover the pesky grays. It came out pretty nice, I had a few stubborn ones (grays that are) that wouldn’t take. Other than that L’Oreal Paris’ Universal Nudes in 4N (Natural Dark Brown) was awesome.

I was so happy to receive this for free for my honest review! Not the first time I’ve bought this brand so I’m familiar with it. I do love to color my own hair at home I have been wanting to go darker. Made my hair feel soft and silky afterwards which I love!! I would highly recommend this brand!!

Do you advise combining two different colors of this line together to achieve the color I am looking for.. the 9N was too light and the 8N may be too dark so I was going to combine them. Also, is the 8N a cool or warm color?

I love everything about it. It smelled great, I love the shampoo and conditioner. (I wish they'd sell that separately) My natural color is lt. brown with about 30% gray. This covered my grays well, except a few at my temple, but that looks natural. My hair turned out only slightly darker than light brown. I've been coloring my hair for decades. I know that I always need to use a color lighter than what I want. To get light brown, I usually have to use dark blonde. Not just with Loreal, with other brands as well. If my hair comes out too dark, I found using Head and Shoulders Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo lighten it within 2 or 3 washes but doesn't damage my hair like color removers do. I intend to keep using this product - my hair feels softer than when I used products with ammonia.

I tried it 2x with the second being a longer sit time and still my gray on the front and sides of my hair are still gray. The original color excellence would cover all gray with no issues. I have found that light brown doesn’t cover my roots as well (they come out lighter than the rest of my hair) so I went with Natural Brown. I purchased this formula because of the “universal” effect having ash in it and the color looked multidimensional. However! This hair color is quite flat and again way too dark. I gave two stars because the application was simple and went well. I like that it came with not just a conditioner but also a gentle shampoo. There was no unpleasant odor. One of the gloves ripped but I always have extra on hand. I might try a shade lighter when it’s time to refresh my color, but I am apprehensive!

I have had gray hair since I was 18 and I am now 40+ I have had trouble finding colors that aren't too red or gold because it comes off as a weird orangey brown. The color I used is 2N Soft Black, which is what I always used in other Loreal hair dyes (although I will likely try 4N next time because this is just a tad too dark, but not bad for winter!) and it covered every bit of my gray. I even took off 5 minutes from my all over color time and it still worked great. Please keep this product around forever!

I've been dying my hair red with other brands for 10+ years and never had any issues. This was the first and last timeI tried this dye.

Have tried many other brands over the years, but always come back to these. In the past 4 years I’ve been trying many other non ammonia products for gray coverage. None are the greatest to be honest. Garnier Olia is a solid choice, just know it would not be perfect grey coverage. Then I found this new non ammonia product by L’Oréal and thought I found my holy grail, was excited to try it. After using for the first time today, I’m never buying it again. Complete waste of money and my time. I have light brown, fine hair and it absolutely did NOTHING to cover my grey. Now I will have to buy the olia product and redye my hair all over again. Don’t waste your time.

After contacting L’Oréal I was told since it’s ammonia free that it may not cover it. If that’s true then you need to remove the statement from the front of the box that says 100% gray coverage as it’s misleading. I bought the 8N in Universal Nudes and was told after to buy Preference Creme. The 8N in that line is not the same which is disappointing.

It didn’t smell as bad as other brands I’ve tried and it was enough for all of my hair. I will buy this the next time I need to color and also if I need to recommend to someone else. The conditioner that was in the box was also amazing. I do love how many colors are available. Definitely worth it if you are looking to pick up hair color.

Rated 1 out of 5 by T Gibson from Terrible I took the quiz and this shade was recommended. The examples on the box indicated the color would be a light to medium brownish blonde. I was shocked when I saw my roots turned apricot. I knew this would not turn out good. I did the roots last and followed directions. I hate how it looks! Now I have to go to a salon for corrective coloring, which I was trying to avoid and save money! Also it burned my scalp. Felt like I was putting bleach on instead of color.

The sent wasn't overwhelming like most box dyes and the packaging was great. I will be purchasing this for the next time I do my hair. They have a variety of colors to choose from. You should give it a try. It's well worth the price.

No stylist has ever been able to completely cover my gray roots. Excellence Universal Nudes actually covered all my gray roots 100% - so shocking and amazing! When I rinsed and dried my hair it was a dark brown but, after my wash this morning, it's now a bit lighter. Nowhere on the packaging does it say if it's permanent or semi-permanent color. All it says is that it gives you the "rich intensity of permanent color" and that the color is "long lasting." Is this going to wash out in 3 weeks? Very odd that the packaging is so vague about this.

The texture was super smooth and esy to apply to the hair. The shade range was to close to my natural color. So I didn't really see a change in my hair color at all.

First, let me start off by saying that I was very impressed with the product texture- it wasn't runny like some at-home dyes. It was very gentle, no harsh smell and I really liked the conditioner and caring shampoo. Where I have an issue is with the color itself. I bought the 5N- the Natural Brown, thinking it would be a rich medium brown, which is usually the color I go for. After I finished coloring and dried my hair it looked almost black. I do see dark brown near my roots but the color turns way darker at the ends. Hopefully it will fade into a lighter shade as the weeks go on. If I were to try this product again, I would try the one below the 5N, the lighter brown shade, as that one might give me the medium brown hair color I am going for. Overall though it's a decent product, had the color been more medium and not so dark I would have given this product five stars, as everything else about it is really good.

The shade 7n universal nudes dark blonde looks great for about the first week or 2, but then fades way too light (especially my gray roots) and I have to color again at week 3. I always use L'Oreal shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Llees678 from Love the application. Not crazy about the color While I love the application- easy to do, no harsh smell, added little comb- the color was WAY darker than expected. I chose 5N which would have been a match for my current color. I followed instructions for root application since I was merely doing a touch up for roots with grays, and then followed up with the rest of my hair for coloring- both for the recommended times suggested on the paper. Now my hair is at least 2 shades darker. Based on what I’m seeing in the images here it’s closer to 2N- so noticeably darker. This is not my first time dyeing myself and it has only been about 8 weeks since my last coloring with another brand. While I might try this brand again, depending on how it turns out over the course of the next few weeks, I definitely will be going with a lighter option since this is not what I was hoping to achieve.

I will say that I am disappointed to open a brand new box to see that the shampoo and conditioner are not sealed properly. From seeing another review there seems to be others having this same issue.
