Hi There, Thanks for reaching out! Sulfates in shampoos are surfactants which function as foaming agents and emulsifiers. The term "sulfate" refers to the sulfate portion of the molecule. This portion of the molecule is associated with greater cleaning and foaming effects. Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate and disodium laureth sulfosuccinate are also foaming agents and emulsifiers but the sulfate portion of the molecule has been replaced. These ingredients are not chemically classified as "sulfates" and are generally perceived as milder surfactants.
