It’s officially time for a little spring cleaning! No—we’re not talking about your wardrobe, but rather your skin care routine. You probably know first-hand how months of icy, frigid weather can take a toll on your complexion (hello there, dry skin). But with winter soon coming to an end (yay!) and spring right around the corner (double yay!), it’s time to start thinking about how you should revamp your skin care routine for the new season. During the wintertime, your skin may experience excessive dryness thanks to the low moisture in the air. “The good news is that the dry, uncomfortable skin of winter will for sure get better since the humidity levels outside are larger (a.k.a. molecules of H20 in the air),” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, head of scientific communications for L'Oréal Paris. So, while it’s usually beneficial to reach for heavier creams and intensely moisturizing products during the winter, you may want to switch to lighter moisturizers for spring. Prepare your skin for the warmer weather that lies ahead by swapping some of the key skin care products in your skin care routine. Here’s how to make the transition from winter to spring.
Reach for one of the following clay facial cleansers that can help draw out the buildup of impurities on your skin and leave you with a clean, clear look as you head into the new season.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Cleanser: This clay facial cleanser is suitable for all skin types and its formula is enhanced with charcoal—so if your complexion looks lackluster, it might be the right one for you. Not only does it help purify the surface of your skin of dirt, oil, and pollution, but use after use, you may notice that your dull skin appears brighter, too.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Purify & Mattify Cleanser: This clay facial cleanser is enhanced with eucalyptus and suitable for all skin types. Have oily skin? This one could be for you! It helps remove excess sebum (a.k.a. oil) from the surface of skin for a refreshed look and feel.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Exfoliate & Refine Cleanser: This clay facial cleanser is suitable for oily and combination skin and its formula is enhanced with red algae. It goes beyond daily cleansing to exfoliate. Exfoliation is the process of sloughing away dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, which can build up and cause the look of dullness.
Skin looking a little dull after months spent in freezing temps? Once spring rolls around try adding exfoliation to your weekly beauty routine. “This is actually the best time to start scrubbing your skin as part of your cleansing routine,” says Dr. Rivera. Exfoliating can help slough away dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, which could be making your skin look dull. As for how often you should exfoliate, there’s no right or wrong answer—everyone’s skin is different, so pay attention to how your responds to determine the frequency that’s right for you. Try a gentle face scrub once a week to start. The following three face scrubs can be used three times a week.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Nourish & Soften Face Scrub: This face scrub leaves skin feeling softer and smoother and looking more refined. Immediately, skin feels smooth and comforted, while skin feels nourished with continued use over time.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Purify & Unclog Face Scrub: This face scrub effectively removes dirt, oil, and impurities from the surface of skin and polishes away dead skin. With continued use over time, pores look tighter, unclogged, and less visible.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Smooth & Glow Face Scrub: This face scrub gives skin a glowing appearance immediately and leaves skin feeling baby-soft, smooth, and comforted with continued use over time.
And don’t forget the rest of your body! If your skin is feeling rough after being cooped up underneath heavy sweaters and snow boots, use an exfoliating body cleanser in the shower. Pay particular attention to areas like your elbows, feet, and knees, which can be prone to dryness—and slather on a body lotion while you’re still damp once (this can help lock in hydration).
When it’s chilly outside, you may gravitate to rich face lotions to help hydrate overly dry skin. But once spring has sprung, you may find that using a lightweight water-based moisturizer, like the L'Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care for Normal/Oily Skin, which is formulated with hyaluronic acid and aloe vera water to help provide long-lasting hydration without a greasy finish, says Dr. Rivera.
This is one skin care rule you should follow year-round! No matter what season it is, you should never skip out on applying a broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen. That’s because spending prolonged periods of time out in the sun without protection can lead to damage (which can show up as visible signs of aging like dark spots and wrinkles down the road). And according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, you can get burned, even on cloudy days. That means even if you wake up to a rainy spring day, you should apply a broad-spectrum SPF as the last step in your skin care routine. “Although SPF should be a constant no matter the season and the weather, it is never too late to create a healthy habit,” says Dr. Rivera. “Remember now that the sun is out more it will be tempting to sit in the light—but make sure you do so with broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen.”
If you find you’re always in a rush to get ready in the morning, consider switching to a moisturizer formulated with SPF, like the L'Oréal Paris RevitaLift Bright Reveal Brightening Day Lotion SPF 30, to help cut down on the number of steps in your skin care routine. Dr. Rivera notes that this moisturizer with SPF triples as sun protection, anti-aging moisturizer, and glow-booster.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends wearing an SPF of 15 or higher for everyday use and an SPF of 30 or higher on days that you know you’ll be spending an extended amount of time in the sun. Toss your moisturizer with SPF in your purse so you can reapply it every two hours—and don’t forget the sunglasses!
If you want to take your spring skin care routine a step further, reach for a face mask three times a week. The L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Face Mask, L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Purify & Mattify Face Mask, L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Exfoliate & Refining Face Mask, L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Clarify & Smooth Face Mask, and L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Clear & Comfort Face Mask are formulated with three types of clay to help draw out the buildup of impurities, dirt, and oils from skin’s surface. You can also multi-mask with these face masks, applying ones to different areas of your face depending on your specific skin care concerns.
