How to Transition Your Hair Care Routine from Summer to Fall How to Transition Your Hair Care Routine from Summer to Fall How to Transition Your Hair Care Routine from Summer to Fall

‘Tis the season of hay rides, pumpkin-flavored everything, and piles of red, orange, and yellow leaves. The first step on your fall agenda? That’d probably be swapping out your wardrobe. After all, the chillier weather makes jackets, scarves, and boots a necessity. But have you given any thought to changing up your hair care routine? It might be a good idea. Below, find four hair care tips that’ll help you transition your hair care routine from summer to fall.

1. Switch to a Nourishing System of Hair Care Products

Is your hair feeling like it could use some extra moisture after months of summer fun? Your fall hair care routine starts in the shower. Make room in your shower for a system of hair care products formulated for dry hair. Try the L’Oréal Paris EverCreme Deep Nourish Shampoo, L’Oréal Paris EverCreme Deep Nourish Conditioner, and L’Oréal Paris EverCreme Renourishing Butter. Use the mask weekly after shampooing.

2. Invest in Heat Protectant

Summer was meant for air drying—after all, who wants to spend all that time with a blow-dryer when you’re just going to take a dip in the pool later, right? But fall is a different story. While you can (and should!) air dry your hair this season for a curly or wavy look, you may be interested in blow-drying or straightening your hair now that the weather isn’t quite as hot out. If that’s the case, then stock your vanity with a heat protectant that you can spritz on before reaching for your hot tools, and make sure not to skip this step in your hair care routine. Try the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Blow Out HeatSpray before blow-drying or the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Iron Straight Heatspray before flat ironing.

3. Try a Bold New Color

Why not go for a trendy new hair color to mark the new season? One of our favorite color families for fall? That’d have to be red. After all, it reminds us of those pretty leaves! The L’Oréal Paris Féria collection contains a variety of red shades to flatter every skin tone, from copper to auburn to burgundy. Just keep in mind that if you’re going lighter, then you’ll need to bleach your hair first—and the darker your base shade, the more work it’ll take to reach your desired color. Of course, coloring your hair red will require a certain amount of maintenance—we’re talking about regular touch-ups. If you’re in a pinch, you can hide gray roots with the L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Cover Up in Red, which lasts for one shampoo. Holding the can 4-6 inches away from your head, spray color onto new growth and partly through the length of your hair to blend it in.

4. Brush Up on Your Braiding Skills

Whether you’re hitting up a fall farmer’s market or going pumpkin picking, styling your hair into a loose braid is an easy way to upgrade your entire look—without taking much effort. Follow our step-by-step tutorial for a side swept braid below.

Step 1: Apply mousse. After shampooing and conditioning, work an egg-sized dollop of a mousse, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Ruffled Body Mousse, through towel-dried hair, then let your hair air dry.

Step 2: Create a side part. Use a rat tail comb to flip your hair to one side. The side you’ve chosen to have more hair on is where your braid will lay.

Step 3: Braid! The type of braid you choose is up to you. A traditional three-strand braid is simple, while a fishtail braid looks a little more intricate. Regardless of what type of braiding technique you choose, you really can’t go wrong.

Step 4: Secure your plait. Once you’ve reached the ends of your hair, tie your braid off with a mini clear elastic. You’re done!
