We all love eucalyptus as a skin care ingredient—especially when it’s in a clay facial cleanser or face mask formula—but you may not realize that the aroma of eucalyptus can have some pretty cool benefits, too. It’s true! The positive effects of inhaling eucalyptus via aromatherapy are backed by research, which means there’s real science behind all those eucalyptus shower pictures on social media. Here, we’re exploring the aromatherapy benefit of eucalyptus plus showing you how you can create your very own eucalyptus shower.
WHAT ARE THE AROMATHERAPY BENEFITS OF EUCALYPTUS?
First things first, let’s clarify exactly what aromatherapy is. According to the Mayo Clinic, aromatherapy involves the use of highly concentrated essential oils from plants, which are to be inhaled or applied to the skin via massage, lotions, or bath salts. The essential oils of plants are extracted from their leaves, barks, stems, and flowers.
However, further research would need to be done to see how these properties manifest themselves in everyday products.
HOW DOES AROMATHERAPY WORK
Per the Mayo Clinic, aromatherapy of essential oils is thought to work by stimulating small receptors in the nose when inhaled, which then trigger other messages in the body’s nervous and limbic systems. The latter of which is the part of the brain that controls emotions, which is why aromatherapy is thought to increase our positive emotions and make us feel happier. Who doesn’t want that?
WHAT IS A EUCALYPTUS SHOWER?
A eucalyptus shower is just what it sounds and looks like: You simply fasten a bundle of eucalyptus plants onto the head of your shower, usually dangling just below the faucet. When you take a shower, the warm steam from the water is thought to bring out the aroma of the eucalyptus, resulting in a pleasant and aromatic showering experience. They also look super chic—that's why you've probably seen pictures of showers decked out with eucalyptus all over Pinterest!
HOW TO CREATE A DIY EUCALYPTUS SHOWER:
Eucalyptus showers are more intricate-looking than they actually are. With just a few supplies and quick steps, you can create your very own eucalyptus shower in under ten minutes! Here’s how:
STEP ONE: GRAB A BUNDLE OF EUCALYPTUS AND SOME TWINE
Next time you pass by the corner store, grab a bundle of eucalyptus plants. If you can’t locate any fresh eucalyptus, try looking in those pre-made bouquets at the grocery store. A lot of times, eucalyptus is used as an accent and for your shower, you will only need four to five branches. To create your eucalyptus shower, you will also need some type of string to fasten the branches onto your shower head. We recommend using twine, which is inexpensive and also strong enough to hold the plant up.
STEP TWO: TIE YOUR EUCALYPTUS BRANCHES TOGETHER
Using a bit of twine, you want to start by tying all of your eucalyptus branches together to form a sort of eucalyptus bouquet.
STEP THREE: FASTEN TO YOUR SHOWERHEAD
Using another piece of twine, fasten your eucalyptus bundle onto your showerhead, arranging it so the eucalyptus falls beneath your showerhead but not in the way of the water that comes out of it. It will basically just be dangling straight down from your showerhead so that when you do shower it’s not in the way.
That’s all there is to it! Now, all you have to do is turn on the faucet and go about showering as usual while simultaneously enjoying the aromatherapy benefits of your eucalyptus. You can leave your eucalyptus there for up to one week. Once it dries out, remove and start fresh!
