What would you do to wake up with perfectly filled and shaped eyebrows each morning? It’s safe to say most of us would do a lot, which is why it’s no surprise that microblading eyebrows has become one of the most popular beauty trends. Microbladed brows are basically a dream come true to those who dread spending extra time on their makeup look to define their arches—but also won’t be caught without eyebrows on fleek. What is microblading? You’ve come to the right place to find out. Below, we’re answering your questions about microbladed brows—covering everything from how long microblading lasts to microblading aftercare to microblading costs. Ready to say, “I woke up like this,” and mean it? Read on!
So, what exactly is microblading? Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup that involves tattooing eyebrow hairs to create your ideal brow shape and fullness. Your technician will outline how you want your microbladed brows to look, then use a small handheld tool with tiny needles to add pigment to your skin. Since microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup, it does not last as long as other eyebrow tattooing methods. However, this allows the overall look of your brows to appear more natural. Microblading also differs from micropigmentation (also coined permanent makeup), which penetrates deeper into your skin. However, both microblading and micropigmentation fade over time and call for additional treatment to maintain their appearance, per the Cleveland Clinic.
Thinking about microblading your eyebrows but not sure if the procedure is for you? Microbladed brows are a great option for those who have thin or no eyebrows, but it can also benefit those who already have full brows but still need to fill in sparse areas daily. Additionally, microblading is great for anyone who would like to perfect their brow shape. It can be as drastic or as subtle of a transformation as you wish.
Like we said, microblading doesn’t last forever. Since this procedure is a form of semi-permanent makeup, it will fade over time. How quickly microbladed brows fade depends on the individual, but generally, touch-ups are done every one to three years.
As with any medical procedure or tattoo, there are risks that come with microblading your eyebrows. Per the FDA, infection due to unsterile tattooing equipment and allergic reactions are two potential issues that can result from tattooing. The FDA also states that granulomas could develop, which are nodules that form around objects, like your microblading pigment, that the body perceives as foreign. And, as with any makeup tattooing procedure, if you’re unhappy with the results, removing microbladed brows is much more difficult than wiping off eyebrow makeup at the end of the day.
Let’s talk microblading aftercare. As with micropigmentation, you’ll be able to go home on the day of your procedure. Your doctor will give you specific, individual instructions, though generally recovery involves icing, applying an ointment, and avoiding sunlight, per the Cleveland Clinic. Also, keep in mind that your microbladed brows will likely appear darker after initially getting them done and will fade slightly in color in the weeks following.
What about cost? Well, it’s no secret that permanent makeup isn’t cheap, and microblading is no exception. Typically, microbladed brows cost anywhere between $350 to $800, depending on where you get the procedure and how much experience your technician has. Also, keep in mind that you may have to get more than one microblading session to achieve your desired darkness, as (like we mentioned earlier) the color will fade initially.
Now that you know more about microblading eyebrows, perhaps you’re ready to take the plunge. If you are, keep in mind that your skin care routine may need a revamp. Here’s Your Skin Care Routine for Tattooed Skin.
