When it comes to eyelashes, the bigger, the better, right? There’s just something about having long, voluminous lashes that instantly transforms any eye makeup look. And while wearing false lashes can certainly give you the drama you crave, they can be tricky to get the hang of. Enter the latest makeup trend: magnetic lashes. Eyelashes that are magnetic are basically the answer to all our makeup prayers. Keep reading to find out how to apply magnetic lashes, as well as how to incorporate them into your next makeup look.
Magnetic eyelashes typically involve two strips of fake lashes, one above your real lashes and one below. How do magnetic eyelashes work? Well, those two strips connect via a magnet in order to stay in place. You don’t have to do any work to make the eyelashes magnetic, the lash strip itself is magnetic. Pretty simple, right?
Recently, magnetic lashes have gotten an upgrade, thanks to their new partner in crime: magnetic eyeliner. With this type of magnetic lash, the eyeliner is what your lash strip connects to, meaning there’s no need to deal with a top and bottom strip of lashes. You only have one strip to apply. Many find this way of applying eyelashes that are magnetic easier, but both types are still an option.
That said, either way, while it may seem like learning how to put on magnetic lashes is as easy as 1-2-3, there’s a little more to it. To give this trend a try, follow our step-by-step tutorial on how to apply magnetic lashes.
Before learning how to apply magnetic lashes, it’s important to start off with the right type of magnetic lash! Magnetic lashes come in different styles, depending on the look you’re going for—just like other kinds of false lashes. They come in different intensities based on how dramatic you want your lashes to appear. There are plenty of options to choose from, and magnetic lashes make it easy to try more than one!
Just because you’re wearing magnetic lashes doesn’t mean you should ditch your mascara. The same way you can wear mascara with falsies, a coat of mascara will help your natural lashes blend with your magnetic ones.
Editor's note: Speaking of falsies, you’ll also find that a lot of hacks for applying false lashes can be applied to magnetic eyelashes, so if you have experience in that area, you’re already ahead of the game!
Trimming your lashes—not your real ones—is a key step when learning how to apply magnetic lashes. The magnetic lashes likely won’t be the exact shape and length of your actual lashes, so you want to trim them for a perfect fit. You can also cut them into smaller sections, such as halves or thirds, to make them more manageable and easier to apply.
Now it’s time for the most important step—actually applying your magnetic lashes. You can apply them with tweezers or simply use your fingers, whatever you feel more comfortable with. First, place the top lash strip on top of your actual lashes, making sure to align the lashes with either edge of your lash line. Then, gently place the bottom lash strip below your lashes and watch the magic happen! The magnets will connect, and you’ll have an instant set of falsies. If you didn’t align the strips as well as you'd like to, simply remove them and try again! Practice makes perfect, and luckily, there isn’t any glue residue to deal with when it comes to fixing magnetic lash mistakes.
Working with magnetic eyeliner? In that case, you’ll only have one lash strip, like we covered earlier. First, apply a thin line of the liner to your upper lid, just as you normally would. Then, use a pair of tweezers to line your lash strip up with your eyeliner and apply, adjusting as needed. Easy peasy!
Of course, you don’t want to leave all the drama up top! Balance out your dramatic lash look by applying mascara to your bottom lashes. We personally love the L’Oréal Paris Unlimited Lash Lifting and Lengthening Washable Mascara for its lifting and lengthening abilities.
Bold lashes are beautiful, but they don’t always make for a complete look. You may want to complement your magnetic lashes with a little more makeup. Since magnetic eyelashes are nothing short of dramatic, you’ll want to wear eye makeup that matches the bold statement of your lashes. We love pairing them with a classic black smoky eye! Here’s how to create your eye makeup look—which should be done before applying your lashes.
Start by applying an eye shadow primer to ensure your makeup lasts all day and night. This will also allow your eye shadow colors to appear their true, vibrant color.
You can create a black smoky eye with the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Pocket Palette Eye Shadow in Silver Couture. First, apply the medium gray eye shadow to your lid. Then, use the darker medium gray eye shadow to define your crease. Deepen your crease by applying the darkest shade to the outer V of your lid. Brighten your eyes by applying the light silver eye shadow to your inner corner. And use a fluffy shadow brush to blend out any harsh lines.
If you’ve already applied magnetic eyeliner, you can skip this step! Otherwise, round out your eye makeup look by creating your sharpest winged eyeliner look with the L’Oréal Paris Matte Signature Liquid Dip Eyeliner, Waterproof in Black. Then, line your waterline and lower lash line with the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in Black.
Good news: Removing magnetic lashes doesn’t take any special skill. If you used two magnetic lash strips, simply pull the magnets apart and take the lashes off, gently, of course. For those wearing magnetic eyeliner, carefully take off the lashes and wipe the liner away with eye makeup remover.
