Rainbow hair colors burst onto the beauty scene in 2017 as one of the biggest hair color trends ever. And now that 2018 is in full swing, rainbow hair has shown no signs of slowing down. The best part of this hair color trend is that it’s super-easy to get in on the fun, with lots of at-home hair color kits you can use to change your hair color. Of course, when you’re sporting rainbow hair, you may be wondering if you’ll need to change up your makeup routine at all. That’s where we come in! Below, we’re sharing not only how to give rainbow hair colors a try from the comfort of your own home, but the best makeup shades to pair with your cool new hair color.
If you don’t want to rock a rainbow hair color permanently—or you want to test out a specific hue before making a bigger commitment—you can use the L’Oréal Paris Colorista 1-Day Sprays, which are temporary and wash out in one shampoo. These temporary hair color sprays are available in 10 of the trendiest shades of the moment, including rose gold, pastel mint, and purple. You can use these temporary hair color sprays for allover color or an ombré effect—it’s up to you! Follow our instructions for applying your new hair color.
Step 1: Place a towel around your shoulders. Protect your clothes from staining.
Step 2: Shake the can well. Do this before each use.
Step 3: Spray on color. Hold the can 4-6 inches away from dry hair and spray.
Step 4: Wait for the color to dry. Wait a few minutes before going about your business.
Keep in mind that you may need more than one can for allover color—and don’t spray too much at once, since color becomes more visible as it dries.
Once you have rainbow hair, you’ll likely start thinking about the best makeup to pair with your new hair color. One idea we love is to match your makeup to your hair color. Below, we have a tutorial for doing exactly that.
Step 1: Spray on your hair color. Use our temporary hair color spray in hot pink and silver to create an ombré effect.
Step 2: Lay your base. Start your makeup look by applying a primer to help create an even canvas for the rest of your makeup application.
Step 3: Smooth on foundation, concealer, and highlighter. Cover up imperfections and create flawless-looking skin with foundation and concealer. To finish your face makeup, apply a highlighter lotion, like the L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer.
Step 4: Line your eyes. Take a black liquid eyeliner and draw on a cat eye. Extend the eyeliner slightly under your eye (about one third of the way in from the corner of your eye).
Step 5: Apply pink and silver eye shadows. Rim your eyes with silver and pink eye shadows to mimic your hair color. Use a silver, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints/Metallics Eye Shadow in Aluminum Foil, in the inner corner of your eye—both above and below your lid. Then use a hot pink from the middle of your upper lid around to the middle of your bottom lid.
Step 6: Add mascara. Coat your top and bottom lashes with the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara.
Step 7: Finish with lipstick. Use a creamy pink lipstick to finish your makeup look.
Next time, why not pair our blue and gold hair color sprays together for a festival-ready look? You can use this makeup tutorial as a template to complement various hair color combos—just swap out the hair colors and makeup shades for whichever ones you prefer to try instead.
