Mexoryl Skin Benefits: Photoprotection
The purpose of sunscreen is to protect the skin from both Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) sun rays. UVB rays cause short-term effects, such as sunburn, while UVA rays cause more long-term effects, such as wrinkles and fine lines, collagen breakdown, and loss of skin elasticity. Sun Protection Factor or SPF indicates a sunscreen’s ability to protect against UVB rays. Therefore, while most sunscreens are capable of protecting against sunburns, many are unequipped to protect against the sun’s long term damage. For this reason, it is crucial for cosmetic companies to offer broad spectrum SPF that also provides protection from harmful UVA rays. In 2006, the FDA approved the use of an over-the counter sunscreen ingredient known as Mexoryl SX. 1
Also known as ecamsule, Mexoryl SX is an organic compound that was developed and patented by L’Oréal to help protect against UV-A radiation. Since then, Mexoryl sunscreen has gained momentum in skincare due to its ability to defend specifically against the sun’s less commonly filtered UVA-rays. The long-term benefit of implementing a sunscreen with Mexoryl into your skincare regimen can help to deter the appearance of photo-aging effects (i.e., fine lines and wrinkles). 2
