Christy Vogel is the Founder and Executive Director of Sounding Joy, a Tampa Bay nonprofit dedicated to providing hearing aids to children whose families cannot afford them. Her mission is deeply personal: at age 11, Christy learned she was hard of hearing—likely since birth—and that she had unknowingly relied on lip reading for years. Unable to afford hearing aids until she was 27, she transformed her own experience into a commitment to ensuring no child goes without the gift of hearing.
Christy founded Sounding Joy in 2021, drawing on her personal journey, her 2023 TEDx talk on living with hearing loss, more than 25 years of leadership experience, and 17 years as the founder of the award-winning digital marketing firm Marketing Direction. Since its launch, the nonprofit has built a network of partner audiologists and healthcare institutions across the greater Tampa Bay area, including Tampa Children's ENT, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, and the University of South Florida Audiology program.
To date, Sounding Joy has provided more than 200 hearing aids to children, helping improve their ability to learn, communicate, and thrive while supporting stronger long-term health and educational outcomes.
For Christy, Sounding Joy brings together her professional expertise, faith, civic commitment, and lived experience into a single purpose: giving children the opportunity to hear the world around them. She says the most rewarding moments are watching a child receive their hearing aids for the first time. In 2024, she was recognized as a Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hero, an honor that included a $50,000 grant.
