Started doing my own highlights after several disappointing and expensive salon experiences. I like doing it myself because I have control over the outcome. So what I'm saying is that you have to be comfortable with DYI and the learning curve. I watched a couple of YouTube videos that helped. I have dark blond hair, no gray. I leave the highlighter in for a full 50 min to get the lightest shade of highlights. It's probably a 3 to 4 hour process from start to finish. I find that by using the metal hook to poke through both layers of the cap (only the top layer is perforated) BEFORE putting the cap over my head, it's much easier to pull the hair through and also easier to find the holes you select with your fingers. So the most time (2 to 3 hours) is spent poking holes and then pulling hair through the cap. (You can watch a movie!). After that it's easy. The product is exceptional, and doesn't leave my hair feeling terrible, like some brands. Not brassy at all (great leave-in toner is what works here). I really can't say enough. It's a great product and I recommend it highly!!

Make sure that you take everything out of the box before you start the process. The instructions state that you are to first mix ALL of the crème developer and highlighting powder. Without realizing that there were two packets of highlighting powder in the box, I used only one of them in the mixture and didn't realize it until I was done with the entire process and was removing the shampoo and toner from the box. Instructions should read to use BOTH packets of highlighting powder. Disappointed in the results because it didn't lift enough color from my hair.

The Best Highlighting Kit Ever

This is the best at-home highlighting product I have found. I used to have my hair highlighted by a professional stylist, but then started doing it myself during the pandemic. I have naturally dark brown hair with reddish undertones and I use the Caramel shade. This product gives me exactly the results that I want and expect. You do have to make sure to carefully follow the instructions for mixing and applying. Also, be sure to leave the product on for the maximum amount of time. If your hair is partially gray or tends to turn brassy you may want to leave it on even longer. I really hope that L’Oreal never stops making this product!

Great product, poor cap design

I am a former hairdresser and have been using this highlighting kit on my own hair for years, (since I changed careers). I always use the one for dramatic highlights rather than the caramel, which I knew would come up much darker than I wanted and likely look orange on my hair. I have always had excellent results and never have any damage or hair breakage. However, I have noticed that the circled holes have gone from dark blue, to light blue, and most recently in my last kit, they were such a light gray that they were barely visible. in addition, the pre- punched holes in the top layer of the cap weren't in the center or even in the circled holes at all. I have had to have my hairdresser friend assist me using this product for a while now because of the lighter circled holes, and this time with the faint circles and the offset holes, it was even a challenge for her. Please, please, please go back to the dark blue or black circles, so I can continue using my favorite highlighting product!

Color nowhere near caramel

I've used La Petite for years and always get a warm caramel colored highlight. Recently, it's bee hard to find but I saw Frost and Design for longer hair, ALSO claiming to give caramel highlights. Other than the edition of a final rinse, they appear to be the same. They ARE NOT THE SAME. There is no warmth at all to these highlights and they look ash gray. I'm stuck with it because I'm not subjecting my hair to re-do. Are you d/c'ing LaPetite? Because it was perfect. I'll not use this product again.

Good, Needs better clarification on mix directions

Great Blonde Highlighting/Frosting Kit Product! Except the directions are quite confusing when it comes to the wording of the highlighting mixture process. The package comes with a 3.5 oz Crème Developer, a Tube of Frosting Protective Crème and Two Packages of Lightening Powder. The directions say to mix all ingredients into a highlighting application mixture. Yet they don’t specify whether or not to use both packages of the Lightening Powder (which the Kit/Box comes with Two). It’s very confusing to a new hair frosting consumer. I learned that “YES”, both of the (two) lightening powder packets are to be used to add to the mixture before application. I wish they’d be more specific with the directions! It’s a great product and I believe the directions can be very vague and confusing! I hope this helps someone else with the same question I had to research to find the correct answer to solve! Worked great. A couple of notes from my experience..... The highlights were looking a little orange. I rinsed out a few strands to check it. Yep. It was orange. So I left it on a little longer. Checking periodically. It got better with time. Also, be sure to use the products for the intended purpose. i.e. Make sure you mix the powder with the creme developer that comes in a bottle and is liquid. Do not mix the powder with anything that is pasty and comes in a tube. Like the frosting protective creme for example.
My hair isn't super long. I used one packet and half the bottle of creme developer. And I took care during the application process. I did use the cap. The whole entire process took some time. But I expected it to. It got a little boring and i was tempted to rush through it. But didnt want to look like a clown when it was done. It turned out great. Hair is not damaged.

Be careful with the toning rinse!

I have used this product many times and have never had an issue, I like that the cap actually fits comfortably (unlike other brands I won't name) and that it comes with a metal hook for finer highlights. UNFORTUNATELY this time, instead of applying the toning rinse while in the shower with my hair mostly wet, like I normally do, I towel dried my hair a little more and followed the directions to start at the hairline and leave the toning rinse in. Now, my bangs and the lighter portions of my hair are blue. Be careful!!!!! (side note, tried to do a review earlier and I couldn't upload an image, so I'm trying again.)

Excellent product. I recently went from dark brown to bleached platinum blonde and it's not an easy transition for an amateur. I was left with a slight orangey hue that needed highlighting immediately. I simply could not wait 6 weeks to try something. I needed immediate rescue. This frost design kit was terrific! The product mixes into an easy-to-use "whipped" solution that makes it smooth to apply all over of your hair. Best part, it actually made my hair more silky . . . Not sure how, but it did! The directions are very specific, so take your time and follow the steps when creating the mix. P.S. I did not use the cap. Just remember if you use without cap to focus on the tips of your hair only.

The worst frosting kit!

Worst hair coloring product ever!!!!! Wish I could give it zero stars! Used this for the first time and my hair was completely bright orange! I usually use Clairol frosting kits and will go back to using Clairol. I have highlighted my hair for almost 40 years and NEVER had an experience like this one! I bought 2 kits unfortunately and threw the second kit in the garbage unopened. What a waste of money and the time I had to put in to correct the color was unbelievable. A big NO to Frost & Design for me!!

I haven't used this product before as I usually have it done by my hairdresser. Unfortunately, I wasn't happy with the highlights or lack of when she did it. She was in a hurry. So, I thought I would give this a try. Overall, it was fine, highlights were fine but there wasn't any shampoo in the box. I was already in the process of application so I couldn't return it. Had to use my regular shampoo hoping it was going to turn out.

Figured this was a great product but it definitely made chunks of my hair fall out. By time I was done brushing my hair I literally had 5 handfuls of hair that had been colored and I have never had an issue with other brands. I will never use this brand again!

Don't buy!!!

This product was completely unusable! Wasted 2+ hours pulling hair through cap..then I followed instructions to mix all of powder..2 pouches with one tiny tube of developing paste. Had to mix with gloves on hands because it became consistency of ultra firm dough. Couldn't even get all of powder incorporated in! Definitely no way to apply to hair so I threw the hard dough away. Waste of time, waste of money..worst product ever!!! Clairol is 1000% better and after this experience it's worth paying at the salon! DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!I would give 0 stars if possible. I wanted to add picture but it doesn't allow.

I just bought a box at Walmart, when I opened it , it was still taped , the cap was missing and one frost powder packet.
Not sure what happened, but I will have to go exchange it . Otherwise, I love these kits and glad you add the toner.

I love this product and have been a loyal customer for years. Please include a larger amount of shampoo.. The current size barely covers my scalp, let alone my thick, long hair. The lack of adequate shampoo forces me to use a competitor’s product for thorough frost & design product removal.

I bought this a few years ago and it worked perfectly. I hadnt been able to get to the colorist so I reached for a Madison Reed of Modena Med. Brown to cover my grays two weeks ago. Today I purchased the H65 Caramel Frost & Design. It turned out RED and Orange and I left it in 50+ mins... not sure what to do to fix it?

I have been using this product on and off for years and have yet to have a bad experience. I don't use the cap and hook, but rather opt for the more optimal foil method. This kit is perfect for me as I have nearly waist-long hair, and other kits don't have enough of the ingredients. I will definitely continue to use this kit in the future

I’ve used this kit since high school and have always loved it. I have a trick for those of you who get orange or brassy results. Try putting a clear or white plastic bag over your head to keep the highlights moist and use your hair dryer to warm them up while they process. Once they turn a pale yellow or caramel depending on your kit, then it’s ready to wash! They do need to go back to the old caps, though. The new ones are so cheaply made!

Favorite Highlight Kit!!

I have been using this highlight kit on and off for years, and have to find anything negative to say about it. Because I have long hair (just above my waist) I have a hard time finding kits that can accommodate my hair length. This one has never let me down. In the past I have gone to salons to get haircuts, and the stylists thought I had gotten highlights professionally done after I used this kit. Instead of using the highlighting cap though, I choose to use folded foils. Whether a person uses the cap provided, or foils, they will get a beautiful result. I hope there will be more color options released in the future

IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE CIRCLES ON CAP

Strand test went fine. Actual product seems decent. When I put on cap the circles around the holes blend in perfectly with my hair underneath the cap making it impossible to see them. It's been years since I've used this product but they used to be a vivid purple instead of a pale grey. Really bad change.

Does Not Come Out Like Photo on the Box

I had an older kit I used several months ago and it seemed to work pretty well. My salon blonde was getting pretty brassy and my roots needed to be colored, so I used one of the root kits to color my roots and used a comb to pull a little of it through to blend. That worked great. I waited about a week and decided to use the Caramel Frost & Design Highlight Kit. Last time I free-handed it and just added a few highlights. This time I decided to use the cap. After watching some videos, I decided using just the holes with the circles probably would be best for me. I still wanted to have a lot of my brunette. I ended up with mostly the same color and it's a brassy (orange) color. I'm not a fan. I won't be using this again and now I'm trying to figure out a toner formula to get rid of the orange. Not impressed.

Hi There, We are sorry to here about your experience. All natural haircolor that is darker than pale blonde has red and gold pigments. When you lighten your natural color, these warm gold and red pigments are revealed. We suggest using our Brass Banisher, a purple shampoo, or you can re-color with a light brown shade of color.

All natural haircolor that is darker than pale blonde has red and gold pigments. When you lighten your natural color, these warm gold and red pigments are revealed. I have medium brown hair, and opted for the "Champagne" shade because highlighting kits for darker hair only get it to a "caramel/orange" color on me. This kit managed to get my hair pretty light, but it was still fairly yellow/light orange after sitting on my head for 2 hours. The kit was easy to mix and apply (I opted to freehand/paint it on vs. using the cap), and it's a creamy, thick consistency so it didn't bleed onto neighboring hair. The step that mystifies me is the toner. It's basically purple water and the directions say to pour it over your hair and NOT rinse it out. The problem is that once the toner dried, my hair was super dry and crunchy--like I'd poured hairspray on it. I also didn't see any difference at all after using the toner. Overall, this kit did lighten my hair, just not as much as I wanted it to. And the toner seemed useless so I'll skip that next time. I think a packet of conditioner with toning purple color in it would be more useful, and a nice extra for avoiding brassiness.

I started using this a year ago since salon prices are through the roof. I get the same look for less than a tip I would give at the salon. Comes with everything you need. I am starting to get grey and have colored hair and have no problem with this for highlights. I did have to find the right time for me. To short and it would be yellow. But the shampoo and Color toning rinse are great. The rinse helps with the yellow. I love this product.

I tried it out and it was a fail my whole head got dyed and my hair looks like. Dirty yellow orange color I won’t buy again
