Chances are, you probably look for skin care products that are formulated for your skin type—whether you’re oily, dry, combination, or sensitive. But do you approach finding a sunscreen the same way—or do you just grab the first one off the shelf before heading out for a beach trip? If you’ve ever been frustrated that sunscreen makes your face look greasy, then it could be a good idea to take your skin type into consideration before choosing one. Here, learn how to find the right sunscreen for your skin type—and get tips for applying sunscreen and taking other sun protection measures.
Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen (meaning one that helps protect against UVA and UVB rays) should be the final step in your skin care routine each and every morning (rain or shine). According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), you should use one with an SPF value of 15 or higher and reapply every two hours—or immediately after swimming or sweating and as directed.
As far as your skin type goes, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to choosing a sunscreen. For starters, if you have oily skin, you may want to look for one that has an oil-free formula. Meanwhile, if you have dry skin, you might benefit from a moisturizing sunscreen formula. Finally, if you have sensitive skin, consider steering clear of sunscreens formulated with alcohol, which can be irritating.
If you’re always on the go, using a moisturizer formulated with broad-spectrum sunscreen, like the L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal Brightening Day Lotion SPF 30, could be a smart choice, as it’ll help you cut down on the number of steps in your skin care routine. (Read our guide to using the L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal Brightening Day Lotion SPF 30.)
Now that you know how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type, it’s time to get to work on applying it! Like we told you earlier, it’s important to wear sunscreen daily—as well as reapply it at least every two hours. According to the FDA, you should apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, and you should use enough to cover your entire face and body. You’ll likely need an ounce (about a shot glass worth) to evenly cover your body from head to toe. According to the FDA, there are a few areas that are often overlooked—we’re talking about your ears, nose, lips, back of neck, hands, tops of feet, and along your hairline—so don’t forget to apply sunscreen to these. Keep your bottle of sunscreen with you in your bag so that you can easily reapply when needed. (Check out these sun care hacks that’ll make your life easier this summer.)
Your sun protection routine shouldn’t stop with applying (and reapplying) sunscreen. According to the FDA, there are a few other measures you should take as well. These include limiting your amount of time in the sun, especially during the sun’s peak hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; seeking shade; and wearing clothing and accessories, like long sleeves, pants, a broad-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses, to cover exposed areas.
To recap: Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that suits your skin type, apply it 30 minutes before going outside and as directed, reapply it at least every two hours, and remember to take other sun protection measures in addition to wearing sunscreen. With these tips in mind, you’re ready for a great summer!
