Are you planning an escape from everyday life—preferably to somewhere warm—sometime soon? We have to admit, we’re a little jealous! Maybe you’ve booked a cruise or maybe you’re flying straight to a secluded island. Regardless of what tropical locale you’ve chosen for your spring (or summer!) vacation spot, packing a few key skin care products with you can help ensure you keep your complexion in tip-top condition. Remember, it isn’t supposed to be a vacation from your skin care routine. Use the following as your checklist—and clear out a little room in your suitcase! From a moisturizer with SPF to a clay facial cleanser to a charcoal mask to a mattifying primer, these are the skin care products to consider bringing with you on your upcoming tropical trip. Good skin and (even) warmer weather
Anytime you’re traveling somewhere hot, broad-spectrum sunscreen should be the first skin care product on your packing checklist. Spending prolonged periods of time in the sun without protection can lead to visible signs of aging down the road, like dark spots and fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, you could get burned. You should opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
But what if it’s rainy outside? You should still apply broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed, since you can get burned even on cloudy days. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen formulated with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapplying it every two hours. Planning to take a dip in the pool? Reapply sunscreen immediately after swimming or sweating. And make sure to apply enough of the stuff to all exposed areas—the Skin Cancer Foundation states that you should use about an ounce (roughly a shot glass worth) from head to toe 30 minutes before going outside.
Have a full day planned? Reach for a moisturizer formulated with broad-spectrum SPF to cut back down the number of steps in your skin care routine. The L’Oréal Paris RevitaLift Bright Reveal Brightening Day Moisturizer SPF 30 is formulated with glycolic acid, vitamin C, Pro-Retinol, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to help brighten the look of your complexion and protect against UV rays. Apply it 15 minutes before going outside. Make sure to pack it in your purse to that you can reapply throughout the day!
While broad-spectrum sunscreen should be your first line of defense against UV rays, there are other steps you can—and should take—especially if you’re spending time somewhere tropical. Avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), wear a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and seek shade.
When you go on vacation, the last thing you want to do is work your way through a long, complicated skin care routine. But cleansing is still important. Did you do your makeup for a night out? Well, don’t just hop into bed before taking off your foundation. When you sleep in your makeup, it can mix with the dirt and oil that’s built up on the surface of your skin, which can lead to clogged pores—and clogged pores can lead to breakouts and blackheads.
Stash a clay facial cleanser that’s formulated to mattify skin, like the L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Purify & Mattify Cleanser, in your suitcase so that you can address the appearance of shiny skin while you’re on your beach vacation. This facial cleanser transforms from clay to mousse when you add water and rids skin’s surface of impurities without over-drying skin.
Before you head out for a day at the beach or sightseeing, of course you need to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen. But what about at night after you’ve spent the day out and about in the sun? After cleansing, it’s time to slather on a moisturizer! When you’re vacationing somewhere super-warm, look for a lightweight water-based moisturizer. External factors like pollution, UV rays, and excessive cleansing can damage your skin’s moisture barrier, causing loss of moisture and an increase in oil production. This can leave your complexion looking overly shiny. The L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care for Normal/Oily Skin has a matte finish, helps reduce the look of excess shine, and provides long-lasting hydration.
Complexion looking a little dull in the lead up to your tropical vacation? Bring a charcoal mask, like the L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Face Mask, with you. This face mask helps reduce the appearance of dull skin immediately. Apply an even layer to clean, dry skin, leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use three times a week for best results. (Head over to Our Best Charcoal Mask: It’s Time to Brighten Up! for more info on this face mask.)
Your skin care routine doesn’t have to take up tons of time when you’re traveling. For convenience, simply pack a no-rinse cleansing option, like micellar water, with you so that you can cleanse even if you don’t have access to a sink. Just don’t forget to throw a pack of cotton rounds into your suitcase, too! Micellar water is powered by tiny micelles—oil molecules—that act as a magnet to lift dirt, oil, and makeup up and away from the skin. The L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin purifies and mattifies. To use, saturate a cotton pad with your micellar water of choice and wipe it across your face. Wearing eye makeup? Hold the pad over closed eyes for a few seconds, then wipe.
When it comes to packing for a warm weather vacation, it’s all about choosing products that are multitasking—micellar water cleanses and removes makeup, moisturizer formulated with broad-spectrum SPF hydrates and protects skin, and so on and so forth. Another product with multiple benefits? Highlighter lotion! While you’re spending time somewhere hot, the last thing you want is to walk around with a face covered in heavy makeup. That’s where highlighter lotion comes in. The L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer, which comes in four shades, illuminates and hydrates skin. Apply alone or under foundation—you can use it all over your face or on targeted areas for a gorgeous glow.
Made a reservation at the fanciest restaurant on the island? Help make sure your makeup doesn’t slip and slide all around your face during dinner. Before applying makeup, use a primer, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Lock Makeup Primer, which has a matte finish.
