Perhaps one of the latest skin care methods to really leave an impression: Korean skin care pays close attention to cleansing, hydrating and treating the skin on a regular, regimented basis. “Korean skincare is everything,” says Sir John celebrity makeup artist and L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador. “Korea is hosting the Olympics of skin care and makeup right now; they have my attention.” Sir John is not alone; many women – and men – have started to take more notice of the skin care regimen that focuses on fresh, youthful complexions.
The nighttime segment of the popular skin care regimen is an essential part of the Korean skin care system. The idea is not to fit your nighttime skin care routine into ten minutes or less, but that you actually make and take extra time to care for your skin. Here’s the standard ten-step routine Korean skin care followers take very seriously – every night.
Korean skin care step #1: Double cleanse. Double cleansing is a two-step, first step. First remove your makeup with a facial wipe, like Ideal Clean™ All Skin Types Makeup Removing Towelettes, and then follow with an oil-based cleanser to draw out excess oils that your skin produces naturally and can build up throughout the day.
Korean skin care step #2: Cleanse again. To truly have a fresh canvas, according to Korean skin care guidelines, you’ll need to follow up your double cleanse with another cleansing step. A foaming cleanser, try Ideal Clean™ All Skin Types Foaming Gel Cleanser, would be good to use at this time if you experience breakouts or tend to have oily skin.
Korean skin care step #3: Exfoliate. Slough away dead skin cells that can build up on your skin’s surface and block pores. You don’t have to exfoliate all over your face every night instead concentrate on the areas that may need more attention like your nose or chin if you’re prone to blackheads. Choose how often you exfoliate based on your skin type.
Korean skin care step #4: Use a hydrating toner. Toners formulated high in alcohol can dry out your skin, instead look for a gentle, hydrating toner, like HydraFresh Toner, to restore your skin’s pH balance. Apply with a cotton pad and gently dab onto your skin.
Korean skin care step #5: Spray on a skin essence. The lightweight formulas moisturize and prep the skin for better absorption of the other hydrating products coming up next.
Korean skin care step #6: Follow with a serum. Also referred to as ‘ampoules,’ concentrated, nutrient-rich serums provide another layer of moisture and create the perfect opportunity to target your skin concerns, like skin brightening or anti-aging. Try Age Perfect® Cell Renewal* Golden Serum, which helps stimulate surface cell renewal for radiant looking skin.
Korean skin care step #7: Apply a sheet mask. Two to three times a week, apply a sheet mask to your entire face. Look for options that are hydrating or others that offer additional anti-aging benefits boosted with collagen or other anti-aging skin ingredients. On off days use smaller targeted treatments like an eye pad or a lip treatment.
Korean skin care step #8: Dab on eye cream. The skin around your eyes is thin and delicate, so it needs to be cared for with an eye cream formulated for the area. Typically, eye creams are formulated with extra oils and thicker consistencies than moisturizers that you may use for your entire face. This thicker formulation will better address common concerns that affect the eye area, like dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet. Try RevitaLift® Anti-Wrinkle + Firming Eye Cream, which firms and reduces puffiness.
Korean skin care step #9: Moisturize. Apply a lightweight moisturizer with an emulsion massage. Be sure to apply to your face, neck and chest. Rub the extra moisturizer into your hands.
Korean skin care step #10: Apply a night cream. End your skin care regimen by applying extra hydration to your skin. Nighttime formulas are usually creamier and richer than other moisturizers and are formulated to give your skin an extra boost of hydration and anti-aging benefits while you sleep. Go for something hydrating and creamy like, RevitaLift® Triple Power™ Intensive Overnight Mask.
And, that’s it! Simple enough? While following this ten-step Korean skin care regimen may take longer than ten minutes, you may find that your skin is worth the extra time – even if you try to incorporate the trend one night a week.
