If you’re like us, you love a perfectly painted statement lip. And, if you’re also like us, you hate when dry lips get in the way of your pretty pout. While you might be layering lip balm over your lips on the regular, you may be forgetting one essential lip care step: exfoliation. Huh? That’s right—just as you buff away dead skin cell buildup from the surface of your skin, you should do the same to your lips to help create a soft, smooth base for lipstick application. And we just so happen to have three scrubs that can be used on your lips! Below, learn about our best scrubs and how to use them on your lips.
Ready to add a scrub to your lip care routine? Read up on our scrubs that work on your face and lips. Each of the following three scrubs is a sugar scrub and can help you smooth and refine the overall look of your lips. (Just don’t use on chapped lips.) They’re each formulated with a naturally-derived blend of three pure sugars for gentle and effective exfoliation. L’Oréal Paris considers an ingredient to be naturally-derived if it is unchanged from its natural state or has undergone processing yet still retains greater than 50 percent of its molecular structure from its original natural source.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Purify & Unclog Scrub: Get your green on by using this green scrub formulated with kiwi seeds and three types of sugar to gently exfoliate your lip’s surface.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Smooth & Glow Scrub: This scrub provides gentle exfoliation for on both face and lips. It’s formulated with finely ground acai and grapeseed and monoi oils.
L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Nourish & Soften Scrub: In addition to the combo of three sugars, this face scrub is also formulated with finely crushed cocoa, luxurious coconut oil, and rich cocoa butter.
Using a scrub on your lips is easy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a refresher course! Follow our tutorial below, including tips for applying lipstick afterwards.
Step 1: Start with clean lips. If you have lipstick on, use the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof - All Skin Types to gently remove makeup before applying your scrub.
Step 2: Apply scrub. Massage your scrub of choice onto your lips with wet fingers. Make sure to use gentle circular motions.
Step 3: Rinse. Wash your scrub off with lukewarm water, then pat dry.
Step 4: Prime your pout. After you’re done exfoliating, go ahead and apply a lip primer. Primer can help create a smooth canvas for your lipstick application.
Step 5: Line your lips. Next up, lip liner! Lip liner can help reduce color from bleeding outside the lines. Use an invisible lip liner or one that closely matches the color of your lips. Try the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lip Liner. While you can over-line your lips to help create the illusion of a fuller-looking pout, only do so slightly as going overboard can end up looking cartoonish.
Step 3: Apply your color. Now it’s time for the fun part! Glide the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lipstick over your lips for a pretty pout. Simply start at the center of your top lip and work your way out to the corners before finishing with a swipe across your bottom lip.
