A quick rinse in the shower and a brush of your teeth may encompass your entire morning or nightly skin care routine to-dos. There’s something to be said for having a low maintenance regimen – that being said, you may not always want to sport a low maintenance look. Sometimes, putting in a little extra time can help your skin reap big rewards. The state of your skin can speak volumes to others. Does your skin look dull? Or is it extra oily? Have you noticed some wrinkles or fine lines? Try incorporating these men’s skin care tips from Dr. Rocio Rivera: Scientific Communications Director, L'Oréal Expert/Paris, into your skin care routine and you can help address your top concerns and look your best with just a little extra effort.
Men’s skin care tip #1: Start and end your day with clean skin. Cleansing in the morning and at night will help maintain your skin’s health by removing environmental dirt and toxins that your skin comes into contact with throughout the day from the surface of your skin. If your skin is dry, or if it can be on the sensitive side after shaving, look for a creamy cleanser. If your skin tends to build up shine and is oily look for gel or foaming cleansers. If you have combination skin, consider a face wash formulated with glycolic acid. Wash your face with lukewarm, tepid – not hot – water and try to not scrub too hard. “Oil at room temperature is more solid than at warmer temperatures,” explains Dr. Rivera, “so by simply using warm water to wash your face, your cleansing will be much more efficient.”
Men’s skin care tip #2: Nourish, protect and prevent with moisturizer. No matter your skin type, your skin needs moisture. The best time to apply moisturizers is after cleansing while your skin is still damp. “Try looking for moisturizing formulas that will protect your skin against irritation, so you’re less likely to experience the negative side effects of shaving,” offers Dr. Rivera. For daytime, consider a moisturizer with SPF to protect your skin against UV rays that can spark some early signs of skin aging like fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin. You can also look for water resistant formulas, in case you sweat throughout the day or plan to come in contact with water, but remember to reapply as needed. For nighttime try an anti-aging moisturizing formula with glycolic acid that can address a myriad of your skin concerns, including excess oil and fine lines.
Men’s skin care tip #3: Focus on your eye area. The skin around your eyes is likely to show the first signs of skin aging, as it is very thin and prone to experience more movement compared to other areas of your skin. An eye cream can help bring moisture to this thin, dry area and can help address skin concerns like crow’s feet, dark circles and puffiness. “You can keep your eye cream in the refrigerator, for an extra cooling effect,” says Dr. Rivera. Apply eye cream in the morning and at night to reap its hydrating benefits.
Men’s skin care tip #4: Address excess oil or dullness and fine lines and wrinkles at the same time. Who doesn’t like a multi-tasking skin care product? A chemical exfoliating pad formulated with glycolic acid can help address a variety of skin concerns at the same time. An alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid can dissolve away surface buildup and refine the surface of your skin so that lines appear more smooth and dead skin cells and excess oil are also dissolved.
Men’s skin care tip #5: Tend to your skin under your beard or mustache. The skin under any facial hair also needs attention. Try to keep the skin in these areas clean and moisturized. Also, consider that it could be nice to start fresh every once in a while and shave your beard completely to truly treat the skin of that area.
Men’s skin care tip #6: Don’t be afraid to pamper yourself – and your skin. Spend a little extra time on your skin two to three times a week and apply a clay mask for ten to fifteen minutes before rinsing it away with warm water. There is a clay mask match out there for anyone and any skin type, so consider your needs before buying the first clay mask you see.
Give these men’s skin care routine tips a try and you may find the extra time you put into your skin care routine may be well worth it.
