Many different things can cause a breakout including stress, certain medications, or your hormone levels, but there are also external, environmental elements that can cause you to breakout as well. Pore congestion happens when oils, dirt and dead skin cells build up under the skin and cause small bumps or pimples. Just as there are many causes behind breakouts there are different types of pimples, on the basic level you have two: Blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads occur when a blocked pore stays open, allowing you too see the grime inside. Whiteheads are when the pore is closed up and produces a white top to the affected area of the skin.
Treatment for breakouts is actually a preventative measure: You must treat the entire face so that when the conditions are ‘right’ and the inflammatory cascade is about to begin, you have already removed the bacteria that would be so important in the development of the acne lesion. Once you have a pimple the inflammatory process has already begun.
Breakouts can happen if you have any skin type and at any age. Day-to-day dirt and oils build up fast, so if you want good skin you have to cleanse your face every night. Refreshing skin to a clean start is a good first step, just don’t over-cleanse as this can strip skin from the oils it needs. Remember: Good skin is balanced skin. First: Remember to keep your hands off of your face. Your hands touch doorknobs, cash, pets and other people’s hands throughout the day. If you wipe your brow or rest your palms on your chin while you bite your nails, than you are putting that daily dirt directly on your skin.
Second: Never go to bed with makeup on. If you are going to sleep and have not removed your makeup that means you did not cleanse your skin either. Makeup clogs your pores and does not allow your skin to breathe, as it needs to, congesting it with dirt and oil.
Third: Keep what your skin touches clean. It’s not just about keeping your skin clean, but what it comes into contact with clean as well. Wipe down your phone with an anti-bacterial wipe safe for electronics. Think about it, your makeup and sweat transfers to it’s surface when you talk on it and if you have a smartphone your fingers – which are dirty – are touching it too. You should also clean your makeup brushes and pillowcases weekly as well as your yoga mat or other exercise gear clean after every use.
