7 Reasons Why You Might Have Very Dry Skin 7 Reasons Why You Might Have Very Dry Skin 7 Reasons Why You Might Have Very Dry Skin

Dryness, a loss of skin’s natural moisture, is a common skin concern shared by many. Even if you have an oily T-zone, for example, you may experience dryness in your cheeks from time to time. Very dry skin can flake, itch and even crack. Sometimes it may be hard to tell if you actually have dry skin as a skin type or if there is something else behind it. Understand the common triggers of very dry skin and see if there are any changes you can make to have more hydrated skin overall.

Skin Dryness Reason #1: The weather. Dry, cold air draws the moisture out of skin. Additionally, if you are living or visiting a climate that is winter-like in season you’ll encounter days inside accompanied by dry indoor heat. These conditions will facilitate dryness, and call for extra moisture. Try applying a hydrating facial oil after your day and night creams to seal moisture in. Age Perfect® Glow Renewal Facial Oil is formulated with eight essential oils to provide all day hydration.

Skin Dryness Reason #2: You’re over-cleansing. Washing your face more than twice a day can dry out skin and deplete it of its natural oils that it needs to stay hydrated. Gently wash your face with circular motions and massage the cleanser into your skin. Try to avoid scrubbing your skin in harsh movements which can cause more dryness.

Skin Dryness Reason #3: You haven’t exfoliated enough. Dead skin cells build up on the surface of skin. This congestion can clog your pores, preventing your serums and moisturizers from delivering the hydration your skin desperately needs. Try an exfoliator two to three times a week, like Go 360º Clean Deep Exfoliating Scrub, to slough off those dead skin cells.

Skin Dryness Reason #4: You’re washing with hot water. Very hot water may feel relaxing in the moment, but is one common cause of very dry skin. Wash your face with tepid; slightly warm water and shower with the same. Also, keep your showers short, between five to ten minutes to avoid excess dryness.

Skin Dryness Reason #5: You don’t apply moisturizer fast enough. You should moisturize while your skin is still moist. Many people may do other things after cleansing, like brush their teeth or pop in a contact, but these things should come after moisturizing. If you have very dry skin layer your hydrating efforts by starting with a serum, then apply your day or night cream and seal in moisture with a lightweight facial oil. Look for moisturizers formulated with hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that helps your skin cells retain moisture. Try RevitaLift® Triple Power™ Concentrated Serum to cushion and lubricate your skin.

Skin Dryness Reason #6: You’re in your late 40s or 50s. Dryness is a common sign of skin aging. Your skin’s natural oil production will most likely decrease by 40 percent in your 50s. You can replenish and nourish your skin by looking for skin care products that are extra hydrating and formulated with LHA, a derivative of salicylic acid. Try Age Perfect® Cell Renewal* Day SPF 15 Cream.

Skin Dryness Reason #7: You’re not producing enough natural oil. If you truly have dry skin as your skin type it means your sebaceous glands, which produce your skin’s natural oils, are not producing enough sebum. Your skin needs the hydration from those oils, so you’ll have to make up for that by becoming diligent with your skin care routine, cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing regularly.

Very dry skin can be uncomfortable and distracting. Protect your skin by eliminating habits and skin care products that promote dryness and provide extra attention and moisture to very dry skin.
