That rosy flush you get after spending a day out in the cold is so pretty—but actually being outside in frigid temps is not exactly fun. Still, as far as makeup trends go, rosy cheeks are totally in style these days. That’s because color on your cheeks makes you look more youthful, bright, and awake. The good news is that you can achieve this popular winter look without having to shiver your butt off outdoors.
Blush is officially about to become your go-to makeup product. We know: Blush sometimes gets a bad rap. If you go overboard, you risk appearing clownish (and anything with too much frost can make you look like you stepped right out of the 1980s). But it turns out blush is so much more elevated these days thanks to product innovations—so it’s not as difficult to master as you’ve been lead to believe. Here, learn what not to do when it comes to blush—and find inspiration for achieving a pretty pink glow.
There’s no reason to be scared of blush. Avoid these blush don’ts and you’ll be sure to have a seamless application every time.
1. Don’t: Apply Blush Too High or Too Low
Avoid putting blush so high up past your temple that it reaches your hairline. Also avoid applying it below the apples of your cheeks. Remember: You want your flush to look natural!
2. Don’t: Skip Blending
Blending is super-important when it comes to wearing blush. Oftentimes, blush comes with a brush, but a makeup sponge or blender can work, too. When you don’t blend your blush it ends up not looking natural and can even start to look like stage makeup.
3. Don’t: Use the Wrong Formula
Get the low-down on the different kinds of blush out there so you can pick the one that best suits your needs:
-Powder: These generally come in a pressed compact and work on all skin types.
-Cream: These usually come in a pot and are great for dry skin types, since the formulas tend to be more moisturizing.
-Stain: These are long-lasting and very natural-looking. However, they can be a little more difficult to apply since you have to blend them quickly before they dry.
4. Don’t: Pick an Unflattering Color
Certain blush shades flatter certain skin tones better than others.
If you have fair skin…opt for pale or baby pink.
If you have medium skin…pick peach or coral.
If you have dark skin…reach for berry or deep rose shades.
Say hello to the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints Blush Kit. It contains four blendable shades to enhance, highlight, and add a pop of color to your face. The four hues (a peachy pink, a coral, a bright pink, and a natural rosy shade) have been expertly curated and are made with saturated pigments that stay vibrant all day long. What’s more, the silky powder formula glides on with the included brush, so you can rest assured your makeup will look flawless—not streaky. You can use the colors by themselves or layer them, depending on the look you’re going for and whether you want to err on the natural or dramatic side. Here are five easy (and gorgeous!) ways to use the palette and score that pretty pink flush:
1. Timeless and Chic
This look is a classic for a reason. If you’re not interested in wearing a ton of makeup but just want a little pop, simply apply the blush shade of your choice in circles to the apples of your cheeks. Smile while you do it for best placement! And before you brush on your blush, get a flawless complexion by evening out your skin with L’Oréal Paris Total Cover Foundation, available in 12 shades.
2. Contoured Perfection
Yep, you can use blush to contour for the chiseled cheeks of your dreams. It’s all about where you place the product. Instead of brushing blush onto the apples of your cheeks, put it on the top your cheekbones, blending it upward toward your temple to buff out the color. You can also add a little highlighter on top for some added shimmer (perfect for holiday parties!). The reason why we love this look: It elongates the face, making it look slimmer.
3. Sparkly Like Snow
It’s time to get glowing! Shimmer like a snow globe by strobing. First, prep your skin with a non-matte foundation and concealer, since that’ll give you a dewy finish that will help emphasize your radiance. Then, use a highlighting powder. Dust it on your cheekbones, brow bone, bridge of your nose, and temples—basically any area you want to define. Complete the look by swiping on a pink shade of blush to your cheeks and lips. (The hot pink shade in the palette has sparkle, so it’d be great for this.)
4. Doll-like and Innocent
Embrace your girly side by applying your choice of blush in an oval shape right above the apples of your cheeks. Trust us, you’ll look adorable!
5. Bold and Fearless
Want to be daring? Then apply blush in triangle shapes on the apples of your cheeks (and blend, blend, blend!).
