Contouring is no longer reserved for models on the runway and celebrities on the red carpet; this is one makeup trend almost everyone is joining in. With more and more people choosing to carve out their cheekbones and define their facial features with face makeup, there’s a greater need to make sure you’re capable of contouring correctly. Unfortunately, it often isn’t quite as simple as tuning into any one makeup tutorial and being good to go. That’s because contouring isn’t the same for everyone. Your favorite celeb or BFF may chisel their cheeks one way, while something totally different will suit you and your face shape. Don’t fret if you aren’t sure what’s right for you and your face shape (angular, oval, square, or round), we’re breaking down how to contour each shape—in just three easy steps—in the video above and in the instructions below. Plus, find our favorite face contouring products for achieving a perfectly sculpted makeup look.
Our Best Contour Products for Any Face Shape
The right way to contour your face depends on your face shape, but there’s no such rule for the products you use to do it. It’s all personal preference! We’re sharing our best contour products—for any face shape—below.
L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Contour Palette: Containing a contour powder, highlighter, and a brush that’s shaped just right for defining your face, this petite palette has everything you need to contour your face.
L’Oréal Paris Infallible Total Cover Concealing and Contour Kit: If you’d prefer a cream contour, this is the product for you. Packed with a variety of concealer shades that can be used to sculpt your face, you can mix colors that are your perfect match.
L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Contour Blender: To apply a cream contour, use this makeup blender to buff your contour color onto your cheekbones, forehead, and jawline.
How to Contour an Angular Face
Do you have a strong jawline and sharp features—even without contouring? Sounds like you might have an angular face! Here’s how to contour an angular face:
Step 1: Define your cheekbones. Start by defining your cheekbones with a contour shade and illuminating the tops of your cheeks with highlighter.
Step 2: Contour for your face shape. Using short strokes and a dark contour powder, soften the shape of your jawline. Apply from the middle of your ear towards your chin for about half an inch, then blend out.
Step 3: Apply a lip color. This look isn’t complete until you’ve coated your lips in color. Try the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Shine Lipstick in a shade that’s just as soft as your newly contoured jaw, like Glossy Fawn or Shining Peach.
How to Contour an Oval Face
Lucky for you, an oval face shape is one of the most desired. Similar in width and length, with a slight curve around the edges, the symmetry of this shape is oh-so-flattering. Here’s how to contour an oval face:
Step 1: Define your cheekbones. We’ll let you in on a secret, defining your cheekbones is the same no matter your face shape!
Step 2: Contour for your face shape. In order to visually shorten your jawline, apply a dark shade to your chin and jawline with straight strokes. (And don’t forget to blend.)
Step 3: Apply a lip color. Finish off your face with a bright matte lipstick, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lipstick in Matte-Mandate.
How to Contour a Square Face
Break out a tape measure. If the width of your forehead, cheekbones, and jaw are nearly the same, it’s a sign you possess a square face shape. Thankfully, if you’ve ever thought your face looked a little too boxy, contouring can come to your rescue. Here’s how to contour a square face:
Step 1: Define your cheekbones. You should be an expert by now, so go ahead and contour and highlight your cheekbones.
Step 2: Contour for your face shape. Soften the sides of your face by applying a dark shade to the sides of your forehead in soft strokes, being sure to blend out before moving on.
Step 3: Apply a lip color. If you ask us, there’s never a bad time for red lipstick, so swipe on a coat of the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick in Matador.
How to Contour a Round Face
Picture a perfect circle. If that’s your face, it’s definitely round. In that case, your goal will be to carefully contour in a way that will make your face look less full. Here’s how to contour a round face:
Step 1: Define your cheekbones. You know what to do!
Step 2: Contour for your face shape. Your face is in need of dimension, which you can achieve by applying a dark contour shade to the sides of your forehead and jawline. Then, blend, blend, blend.
Step 3: Apply a lip color. Add a trendy touch to your look with a metallic lip color. Try the L’Oréal Paris Infallible PAINTS/LIPS Metallic in Smoldering Eclipse.
Pair your contour with a stunning highlight. Here’s How to Apply Highlighter.
