How to Use Matte Eye Shadow How to Use Matte Eye Shadow How to Use Matte Eye Shadow

When there are loose glitters, shimmering eye shadows, and metallic eye makeup tutorials galore, the idea of going matte might seem a bit, well, bland. But as much as we love sparkly eye makeup, with the right application, a statement matte eye can be just as stunning. Don’t believe us? Check out our favorite day and night looks using matte eye shadow below. Play it cool during the day, then amp up the drama for a night out.

The Best Matte Eye Shadow Look for Day

During the day, opt for a matte finish with a two-toned statement eye that has plenty of dimension without looking overdone.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Total Cover Concealing and Contour Kit

L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Shape & Fill Mechanical Pencil

L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Pocket Palette Eye Shadow in French Biscuit

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Prime your lids. The best way to create a matte eye shadow look that lasts is to cover your lids in a matte eye primer or concealer beforehand. If you don’t have a designate eye primer, you can use a dab of concealer to smooth out your base.

Step 2: Pencil in your brows. Next up, use your brow pencil to shade in your brows. Remember that the days of super-defined brows are over—now, it’s all about softness.

Step 3: Conceal your brows. Once you’ve filled in your brows, conceal the underside of them using your concealer palette. A quick touch of concealer will instantly make your brows pop without having to over-fill them.

Step 4: Start with the nude matte color. It’s finally time to bring your matte eye shadow look to life! The first thing you want to do is layer your lid with the light matte color in your four-shade palette. Be sure to fill in to just above your crease from the outer corner, gently tapering as you reach the inner corner.

Step 5: Add dimension with the taupe color. Next, blend some of the darker matte color into your outer crease. Blend this color in about two thirds of your eye to create depth.

Step 6: Finish with mascara. Top your look off with a coat of volumizing mascara. And there you have it: a minimalist matte eye shadow look that pairs well with anything!

The Best Matte Eye Shadow Look for Night

Nighttime calls for darker lids and sultry lashes. With a little extra matte eye shadow, a swipe of eyeliner, and an extra coat of mascara, you can easily create a gorgeous makeup look to top off your outfit.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Total Cover Concealing and Contour Kit

L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Shape & Fill Mechanical Pencil

L’Oréal Paris Color Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Matte It Up

L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Acro-Matte

L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Matte-ison Avenue

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints Eyeliner in Black Party

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Prime your lids. By now you know how important it is to prime your lids for a statement eye. If you want your look to wear evenly as you dance the night away, this should be the first step in your eye makeup routine.

Step 2: Pencil in your brows. Since brows require a touch of concealer at the end, you want to pencil them in before creating your dramatic matte eye so that you don’t cover up any of your thoroughly blended look. After filling your brows in with a pencil, line the bottom edge of your brow with a highlighting color from your concealer kit.

Step 3: Start your matte statement eye with a light brick hue. Pop open the lid of the L’Oréal Paris Color Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Matte It Up and dust the medium hue onto your lid. The trick to creating a gradually blended lid is to start with light to medium shadow so that your darker colors will have something to easily blend into once you apply them.

Step 4: Add dimension with a slightly darker terracotta hue. Next, define your crease with the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Acro-Matte. Extend this color from your outer crease to just before the inner third of your eye. Blend it a bit upwards towards your brow bone on the outer edge to create a little more depth.

Step 5: Add drama to your crease with your darkest brick color. To create a smoky, dramatic effect, blend the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Matte-ison Avenue into your outer crease.

Step 6: Shade your under-eye with the dark brick color. Use the same color to add drama to your lower lid.

Step 7: Draw on a wing tip. There’s nothing like a wing tip to dramatize your eye makeup. In fact, it can be the instant difference between a daytime and nighttime eye. To get the look, lightly draw a line from your inner eye out just beyond your outer corner using liquid black eyeliner.

Step 8: Finish with mascara. Top it off with mascara and you’re ready to slay the night away!
