It’s time to celebrate one of our favorite holidays of the year: Valentine’s Day! Whether you’re prepping for a date with your significant other or planning a girl’s night out with your best friends, there’s no denying that love is in the air. So, why not showcase it with a pretty hairstyle? Below are 14 fabulous hairstyles, ranging from braids to updos, that are absolutely perfect for Valentine’s Day. Keep reading for step-by-step instructions for creating each hairstyle, along with the products needed for each look, including hair spray, hair cream, and hair mousse.
Love the space buns trend but want to be able to show your length this V-Day? This is the hair style for you!
What you’ll need:
Rat tail comb
Mini clear elastic
Hair texturizing spray
L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Strong Hold
Get the look by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Part your hair. Using a rat tail comb, create a center part.
Step 2: Make two half-up ponytails. Take you rat tail comb and horizontally part the underside of one side of hair to create a half-up ponytail on each side of your head. Secure each with a mini clear elastic.
Step 3: Add texture. Spritz each half-up pony with some hair texturizer. After you’ve sprayed, use your rat tail comb to gently tease each pony.
Step 4: Bun up. Working on one teased pony at a time, gently wrap your hair around itself in a loose bun. Pop in a few bobby pins and you’re good to go!
Step 5: Seal your style. Use strong hold hair spray to help ensure your buns maintain their shape.
Space buns a little too far-out for you? Keep it a bit more classic with a low braided bun that’s sure to turn heads.
Boar bristle brush
Step 1: Prep wet hair. After you’ve hopped out of the shower and towel-dried your hair, squeeze a quarter-sized amount of hair cream into your hand and evenly massage it through your hair from roots to ends.
Step 2: Smooth and part your hair. Once your hair is completely dry, run a boar bristle brush through it. Using your fingers, part your hair straight down the middle and tie a pigtail on each side of your head with a mini clear elastic.
Step 3: Braid from base to ends. Starting at the base of your ponytail, classically braid your hair to the ends. Instead of securing them with hair ties, wrap them into a bun and secure with bobby pins.
Step 4: Use a shine spray. Since this hairstyle is all about refined style, finish with a spritz of shine spray.
Spruce up your favorite simple hair style with a little knot and you’ll rock serious style that’s super-easy to create.
L’Oréal Paris EverSleek Keratin Caring Shampoo
L’Oréal Paris EverSleek Keratin Caring Conditioner
Step 1: Start with clean hair. To really add brilliance and shine to your knotted ponytail hairstyle, start your look with the right hair care in the shower by washing your strands with a smoothing shampoo and conditioner.
Step 2: Split your hair into two low sections. Divide your hair at the base of your neck and you’re ready for the next step.
Step 3: Finish with a knot. Taking each side of hair in hand, tie a knot. And then another. And just like that you’ve transformed your simply pony into a work of hair art.
Feelin’ the love this Valentine’s Day? Let your hair show it with this heart-shaped braided crown.
Step 1: Brush your hair back and map out a heart. Using a rat tail comb, brush all of your hair straight back. Next, flip your comb and use the tail end to map out a heart-shaped part.
Step 2: Create a ponytail. Using the hair from the inside of the heart, tie off a ponytail right and the bottom, leaving the rest of your hair free.
Step 3: Braid your crown. Using the hair that’s not in the ponytail, create a braid of your choice—we love how Dutch braids and rope braids look with this hair style—on each side starting at your hairline and working your way back to the base.
Step 4: Pin up your ends. After you’ve braided both sides of your hair all the way to the ends, wrap your braids up and pin them into a simple updo.
Good news: We’ve got the answer to your #hairgoals prayers—just in time for Valentine’s Day—with this textured braid.
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Volume Inject Mousse
Large barrel curling iron
Mini clear elastic
Step 1: Let your hair air dry. Hop out of the shower and apply an egg-sized dollop of hair mousse.
Step 2: Add some curls. Once your hair is completely dry, use a large barrel curling iron to create a few curls here and there.
Step 3: Start braiding. Grab three sections of hair just above the base of your neck to begin French braiding. Taking more hair in with every stitch, weave your hair to perfection.
Step 4: Secure the ends. Once you’ve reached the end of your braid, tie it off with a mini clear elastic.
Step 5: Pancake your braid. Gently pull your braid apart starting at the bottom and working your way to the top. Finish your look off by pulling out a few face-framing strands.
There’s no denying that the messy bun has earned its place among the ranks of must-wear hairstyles.
Texturizing hair spray
Flexible-hold hair spray
Step 1: Start with texturizing hair spray. Messy buns look especially gorgeous with day-old hair. So, spray some hair texturizer on first.
Step 2: Pull your hair up. Use your hands to pull your hair up into a ponytail. Instead of securing it with a hair tie, just keep going and spin your hair into a bun. Don’t worry about smoothing any bumps out because part of what gives messy buns their allure is their effortlessly gorgeous appeal.
Step 3: Frame your face. Gently tug a few strands out along your hairline and temples to add a romantic flair to your messy ‘do.
Step 4: Create flexible hold. Use flexible-hold hair spray to help lock your style in place without making it feel stiff.
Nothing goes with Valentine’s Day quite like a bouquet of flowers. Give yourself a V-Day bloom that will instantly life your spirits and your overall look by rocking this half-up fishtail flower braid.
What you’ll need:
Step 1: Create a center part. Easy!
Step 2: Begin braiding. Starting at your hairline, create a fishtail braid on each side of your head. Instead of braiding all the way down, stop braiding just below your crown.
Step 3: Make your flower bloom. Before you begin braiding again, wrap your two strands around each other into a little bun—ahem, flower—and pin it in place.
Step 4: Finish braiding. Now that your flower is pinned in place, finish fishtailing to your ends and secure with a mini clear elastic.
Tired of rocking the same old updo every Valentine’s Day? This braided rendition will have you looking classic in the front and super-intricate in the back.
Fine tooth comb
Step 1: Gather your top section of hair. Using a fine tooth comb, divide the top section of your hair into a miniature ponytail with a clear elastic. Remember that you will be creating three equal ponytails, so make sure that this one isn’t too thick.
Step 2: Gather your middle section of hair. Just like you did with the first ponytail, make a second directly under it with the middle section of your hair.
Step 3: Gather the lower section of your hair. One more time! Now you have three stacked ponytails.
Step 4: Being braiding. Starting with your top ponytail, begin French braiding by grabbing new sections of hair from the middle and lower braid. Continue adding in new pieces of hair until you reach the end of your last ponytail.
Step 5: Pancake your braid. Now that you’ve fully braided your pony, it’s time to make it look fuller. Gently tug at the outer edges of it—a.k.a. pancake it. Don’t tug too hard because you don’t want all your hard work to come undone.
Step 6: Pin the top of your braid. Gently tug the top of your braid to pin it in place just above the top ponytail base—and cover up the hair tie fully!
Step 7: And pin the bottom, too. Now, take the bottom of your braided pony and roll it under itself to complete your look. Pop in a few bobby pins and you’re good to go.
Another way to spruce up a classic ponytail is to make it pin straight and super-shiny.
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Iron Straight HeatSpray
Hair serum spray
Step 1: Start by straightening your hair. Before straightening your hair, use a heat protectant.
Step 2: Add shine. Once you’re done, spritz on a hair serum spray.
Step 3: Smooth your hair into a ponytail. To make your hair look as smooth as possible, use a boar bristle brush to smooth it back into a high ponytail.
Step 4: Use hair spray. This will help to set your style and lock in place.
Step 5: Conceal your hair tie. Using a small section of hair from your ponytail, wrap the base of your ponytail to cover up your hair tie. Use a bobby pin to secure the ends in place underneath the base of your ponytail.
If you’re all about keeping your hair out of your face while leaving it down at the same time, look no further than these cute pigtails updated for date night.
Mini clear elastics
Step 1: Create a middle part. Simple enough!
Step 2: Weave a Dutch braid on each side of your head. This is just an inverted French braid—weave under instead of over. Instead of weaving to the ends, stop at the nape of your neck and secure each pigtail with a mini clear elastic.
Step 3: Curl your pigtails. To add a certain feminine flair to your pulled-back hair style, use a large barreled curling iron and curl from base to ends. Take a small section of hair from each pigtail and wrap it around the base of your pigtail to conceal your hair ties.
Still looking for a ponytail tutorial that defines your type of style? This gem will do the trick!
Step 1: Create your ponytail. Gather your hair into a mid-level ponytail, leaving a section of hair loose on each side of your head.
Step 2: Separate your loose sections. Start on one side of your head and divide the loose front section of hair into a top layer and a bottom layer.
Step 3: Start criss-crossing. Take one section from one side of hair and cross it over the back of your ponytail, pinning it in place. Take one section from the other section of hair and do the same thing. Continue this process with the remaining two front sections of hair.
Step 4: Pin your tails. If the tails of your criss-crossed sections of hair are super-long, continue the process with them, continually crossing for an almost fishtail-like appearance.
Do you love the practicality of headbands? Hello, braided chignon!
Step 1: Create your first braids. On each side of your head, create a small braid that is tied off at the back of your head.
Step 2: Weave your second braids. Whether you want to weave another classic braid or have some fun with ropes or fishtails, take two more sections of hair just below the first braids and braid from the front of your head on each side and secure in the back.
Step 3: Tuck your hair. Tuck your remaining hair up into the mini braids and pin in place. To help ensure your look stays in place, spritz on a flexible-hold hair spray.
Fake a fishtail braid with this easy-to-replicate hair style.
Step 1: Start just above the nape of your neck. With a small section of hair from both sides of your head in hand, twist them inwards towards one another and secure with a clear mini elastic.
Step 2: Repeat. Follow the exact same process just underneath the first mini pony.
Step 3: Invert your ponytails. Take the lower ponytail and pull it up and through the top ponytail to invert it.
Step 4: Repeat. Following this same process, create mini ponytail, invert it into the ponytail above it and pull tight. With every new ponytail, use hair from the inverted ponytail until you reach the ends of your hair.
Step 5: Muss up your braid. Gently tug to pull your “braid” apart.
When in doubt, blow it out.
Step 1: Add hair mousse. Pump up your ‘do by applying mousse to wet hair.
Step 2: Blow-dry with a barrel brush. Wait until your hair is 80 percent dry, then pull your hair upwards to lift the roots as you blow-dry it.
Step 3: Curl your hair. Once your hair is dry, use a large barrel curling iron to create big, bouncy curls.
Step 4: Pin your curls. Instead of letting your curls hang loose, pin each curl to your head. This will help to set your style.
Step 5: Use flexible-hold hair spray. Once all of your curls are pinned, give your hair an allover spray of flexible-hold hairspray to help them maintain their shape.
Step 6: Let your curls down. After about 15 to 20 minutes, unpin your curls and shake them out.
Step 7: Gently brush your hair. Using a boar bristle brush, gently comb through your curls to smooth your strands while maintaining maximum volume.
Step 8: Finish with hair spray. You’re officially ready for your big night out!
