Summer is officially here. As much as we love the warm weather, flowy sun dresses, and having the opportunity to wear sandals on a daily basis, one summer element that we’re not so fond of is the ever-present choice between wearing gorgeous, free-falling hairstyles and having a cool neck. No matter how thick your hair is, if it grazes on and past your neck, you know just how uncomfortable the heat can be, but that doesn’t mean you have limited options when it comes to styling. Instead it just means that it’s time to get creative with braids, updos and buns. Here, we introduce you to five fun summer hair styles that will take you warm-weather beauty look to the next level.

Summer Updo #1: Jumbo Top Knot

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Air-Blown Texture Mist

Hair tie

Bobby pins

How to get the look:

Step 1: Give Your Hair Some Texture

Whenever “jumbo” is in the title, you ought to know texture spray will be a part of the agenda. To encourage your biggest top knot ever, start by spraying damp hair with your texturizing mist. Gently squeeze your hair along the shaft to enhance texture before allowing hair to air dry and moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Pull Your Hair Into a High Ponytail

No need to use a brush, just flip your head and pull your hair high atop your crown. Tie it off with a hair tie.

Step 3: Twist, Spin, and Pin Your Top Knot

Bring your jumbo top knot to life by twisting from your pony down to the ends. Next, spin your twisted pony around itself, gently piecing it apart as you spin so as to create a bigger top knot. Pin it in place and revel in how breezy your neck feels.

Summer Updo #2: Loose Low Fishtailed Bun

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray

Clear elastic

Bobby pins

How to get the look:

Step 1: Prep Your Hair

Start your hairstyle by spraying with strong hold hair spray to help give your strands a little extra grip — something fishtail braids can always use more of.

Step 2: Weave a Fishtail Braid

Pull all of your hair back and split it in two sections. Divide a small section of hair from the outermost side of one section, pulling it over top that section and across to the other section. Next, take a small section of hair from the outermost side of the other section, pulling it over top that section and across to the first section you were working with. Repeat this process until you reach the ends of your braid. Tie it off with a clear elastic. Before moving on to the next step, gently piece apart your braid, starting at the ends, working your way up to create a more voluminous fishtail.

Step 3: Wrap Your Braid Into a Bun

Next, coil your fishtail around itself, fluffing it up and pinning it in place as you go. Voila!

Summer Updo #3: Messy Space Buns

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray

Hair Ties

Fine-tooth comb

Bobby pins

How to get the look:

Step 1: Give Your Hair Some Texture

The messier the better! To really give your hair that messy edge, spray damp strands with wave spray to enhance texture.

Step 2: Part Your Hair

Divide your hair straight down the middle and tie each side into a high pigtail.

Step 3: Create Your Space Buns

One pigtail at a time, use your fine-tooth comb to back-comb the hair for a more textured look. Once you’ve enhanced the texture, spin your hair around itself and pin it into a bun. Repeat on both sides.

Summer Updo #4: Rope Bun

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Precious Oil Satin Hairspray

Hair tie

Clear elastic

Bobby pins

How to get the look:

Step 1: Brush Your Hair Into a High Ponytail

Pull Your hair into a high ponytail and spray it with shine-enhancing hair spray before combing over it once more and tying it with a hair tie.

Step 2: Create Your Rope Braid

Split your ponytail in half and spin each side down to the ends. Then, spin the two sides together in the opposite direction to create the rope look. Tie it off with a clear elastic.

Step 3: Pin Your Bun In Place

Before spinning your rope braid around itself, gently tug at each section for a more voluminous look. Complete your look by twisting it into a bun and pinning it in place.

Summer Updo #5: French Twist

What you’ll need:

Slides

Clear elastic

Bobby pins

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray

How to get the look:

Step 1: Insert a Couple Slides

Part your hair down the side and brush all of your hair over to the larger side of your part, swooping over one shoulder. Insert slides to keep the hair in place. Next, tie a clear elastic around the ends of your hair.

Step 2: Roll Your French Twist

Holding the tied-off ends, roll your hair into your French twist.

Step 3: Pin It In Place

Once you roll your hair all the way in, pin it in place and finish with a spritz of hair spray.

Once the temperatures cool off you may be ready to let your hair down. If that’s the case, you’ll want to check out our article, Best Medium-Length Hairstyles for Summer 2018.
