‘Tis the season for living it up in an ultra-chic updo. The holidays aren’t only a chance to consume your weight in egg nog and purchase way too many presents—they also provide a feast of opportunities to show off your very best hairstyles. If you don’t already have your beauty looks for the next few months pinned down, we’re sharing three of our favorites, from an updated bun to a classic twist to a seriously shiny chignon. And the best part: Each and every hairstyle will work on any hair type. Yep, whether you have straight hair, wavy hair, or curly hair (or something in between)—you’re good to go. Keep reading for step-by-step instructions on how to create these holiday hair twists and what hairstyling products to use to get the looks. No matter which hair twist you choose to wear to your next holiday party, we have a feeling that it’ll be a night that’s merry and bright.
If there’s one thing we love about braids, it’s how they can update any look. Worried your bun is a little on the boring side? No problem—just add a braid.
Get the look by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Apply hair texturizer. Before you really get going, give your hair a bit of texture. Spritz a styling hair spray, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray, through damp strands, then allow hair to finish air drying.
Step 2: Section hair. Separate out a small section from the front of your hair.
Step 3: Tease. Using a teasing comb, lightly tease at the top of your head for added volume.
Step 4: Create a ponytail. Gather all of your hair, excluding the front section, into a ponytail and secure with a hair tie.
Step 5: Create a bun. Twist the ponytail around its base to form a bun. Add bobby pins in various spots to lock the bun in place.
Step 6: Create a braid. Returning to the front section of hair, create a standard three-strand braid.
Step 7: Wrap the braid around the bun. Pull the braid towards the back of your head and wrap it around the bun before pinning the end in place.
Step 8: Finish with hair spray. Don’t let that braid and bun combo go anywhere. Lock everything in place with a coat of the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold.
Feeling a little fancy? Even if the classiest event you have to attend this season is an ugly sweater party, you can pull off this easy French twist, which can instantly elevate any outfit.
Step 1: Separate a few pieces of hair. Pull out a few (small!) pieces of hair from each side of your part at the front of your face.
Step 2: Create a ponytail. Gather everything except those pieces into a ponytail.
Step 3: Twist the ponytail and wrap the ends. Twist the ponytail upwards, into a spiral, then wrap the ends around itself and pin them in place.
Step 4. Apply hair putty. With a hair pomade, like the L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Overworked Hair Putty, apply a small amount of product throughout the style to add texture and shape.
Step 5: Sweep back front pieces. Spray the loose front pieces with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray, and before they dry, sweep them backwards, incorporating them into the style.
Step 6: Finish with hair spray. Using the same hair spray, give the completed style a few spritzes.
Impress everyone at your office gift exchange with a style that looks more complicated than it really is, like this high-shine chignon.
Step 1: Part hair down the middle. Using a comb, part your hair straight down the middle.
Step 2: Apply hair cream. Work a hair cream through damp hair, then allow to dry.
Step 3: Comb hair. Comb through hair, making sure very last strand is smooth.
Step 4: Add shine. Give your hair a glossed look with a shine spray.
Step 5: Create a ponytail. Pull hair into a low ponytail and secure with a hair tie.
Step 6: Apply more hair cream. For extra smoothness, apply more hair cream to the ends of the ponytail.
Step 7: Fold and pin the ponytail. Fold the ponytail under and wrap the end around the base, then pin everything in place.
Step 8. Finish with hair spray. You know the drill by now! It’s hair spray time.
