Graduation day—it’s finally here. You’ve been waiting for this moment for what feels like forever so it makes sense that you want to look your best for what’s sure to be a day full of celebrations and pictures. While there are endless gorgeous hairstyles, not all work perfectly with a graduation cap. To help you style your strands for a cap-friendly appearance, we’ve rounded up five graduation-approved looks incorporating some of the top hairstyle trends, as well as tried-and-true classics. Whichever hairstyle you pick, be sure to stock up on plenty of hair spray and hair mousse to create your look—you’re sure to look stunning walking across that stage.

Graduation Hairstyle #1: Tamed Roots

Seen everywhere from the runway to the sidewalk, tamed roots are all about super-smooth strands from your part down towards your temples. From there it’s free-flowing straight strands or waves, or perfectly pinned updos. The trick is to create a frizz-free finish that looks smooth and chic, not wet and sleek.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz-Defy Shampoo

L’Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz-Defy Conditioner

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Precious Oil Satin Hairspray

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Start with Clean Hair

Since this look focuses on ultra-clean, chic-looking hair, it’s best to start your style in the shower with a smoothing system of shampoo and conditioner that can help tame frizzy hair.

Step 2: Fight the Frizz

If you don’t want to use heat tools, you can let your hair air dry, but first be sure to massage some frizz-fighting hair cream through damp strands. Make sure to apply a little extra at your roots, extending a couple inches down the sides of your head to really lock in that tamed roots look.

Step 3: Lock Your Look

To complete your look, spritz from your roots to down a few inches with a shine-enhancing hair spray. This can help further tame your roots and create a touchable hold that amps up the shine so that when you remove your cap your hair will look flawless.

Graduation Hairstyle #2: Effortless Beach Waves

Another free-flowing hairstyle that pairs beautifully with a grad cap is beachy waves. The best part? The effortless texture is super easy to achieve.

What you’ll Need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Spritz Your Hair with Wave Spray

After hopping out of the shower and towel drying your hair, spritz some of a wave-enhacning hair spray into your strands. Scrunch from your ends up to help amplify the texture and simply let your hair air dry. It’s really that easy!

Graduation Hairstyle #3: Side Stacked Braid

Side braids are the best of both worlds in the ways they show off your enviable length while getting it all off your neck for a cooler-feeling as you face the heat of a packed grad hall. When you pair that with a detailed stacked braid, the end look is even more stunning, making it the perfect option for your big day.

What you’ll need:

Clear elastics

Bobby pins

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Detangle Your Hair

Gently comb out any tangles in your hair because there’s nothing like nearly finishing a braid only for it to all unravel due to a knot.

Step 2: Pull All of Your Hair Around to One Side of Your Head

Pretty self-explanatory, right?

Step 3: Clip a Small Section of Hair Off to the Side

Pull about a quarter of your hair out from the underside of your full mane.

Step 4: Start with the Larger Section of Hair

Fishtail this section all the way to the ends. Tie it off with a clear elastic before fluffing it up to add volume to your look.

Step 5: Braid the Smaller Section of Hair

You can choose to weave a traditional three-strand braid or another fishtail.

Step 6: Layer the Smaller Braid on Top of the Fishtail Braid

Wind the smaller braid up over the bigger braid and lay it flat along the top of it, tying both together at the ends.

Step 7: Pin your Braids Together

Pop a few bobby pins through the underside of the braids to pin them together and your pretty ponytail is complete!

Graduation Hairstyle #4: Hollywood Waves

Your big day calls for big looks, so why not opt for voluminous Hollywood waves? Think: red carpet glam peeking out from beneath your grad cap.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Shampoo

L’Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Conditioner

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT High Lift Creation Spray

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Volume Inject Mousse

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Iron Straight Heatspray

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Start in the Shower

To give your hair the boost it needs for your big day, start in the shower with a volumizing system of shampoo and conditioner.

Step 2: Pump Your Hair Full of Product

After towel drying your hair, pump it full of hair mousse and top it off with an allover spritz of texturizing hair spray. Together these products can help enhance your volume while also protecting against heat.

Step 3: Blow-Dry and Curl Your Hair

Once your hair is prepped for volume, blow-dry it fully. Then, spray it with heat protectant to further protect it against heat while curling. Since the goal is big Hollywood Waves, opt for a larger barrel and curl all over your head.

Step 4: Shake It Out

Once you’re done curling your hair, flip it over and shake it out. Give it a nice run-through with your fingers, adjust your part and top it off with a spritz of hairspray to help to lock your look and ward off any weather-related frizz.

Graduation Hairstyle #5: Twisted Fishtail Ponytail

If looking like a gorgeous goddess sounds like a good way to top off your grad outfit, girl, do we have the hairstyle for you!

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Strong Hold

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Part Your Hair Down the Middle

Since this look is meant to be romantic and slightly disheveled, don’t worry about a perfectly precise part, just use your fingers and you’re good to go!

Step 2: Create a Dutch Braid on Each Side of Your Head

When braiding, incorporate hair half-way back along your part before braiding to the ends so that the braid’s hang down near the front of your face. Pancake each braid and spray them with hair spray.

Step 3: Divide Your Remaining Hair into a Top and Bottom Layer

Horizontally part the rest of your hair and pull the lower section down around to one shoulder.

Step 4: Begin Braiding the Top Section of Hair

Next, fishtail the top section of hair all the way to the ends. Pancake the braid as you go. Once you reach near the ends, pull the braid down around your hair-free shoulder and grab the bottom layer of hair from your other shoulder to begin working.

Step 5: Then Braid Your Bottom Section

Fishtail your bottom section of hair all the way to the ends. Pancake as you go. Spray with hair spray.

Step 6: Twist your Fishtail Braids Around Each Other

Once you reach the ends, secure the two braids together with a clear elastic, making sure to use a small strand of hair to cover the hair tie.

Step 7: Pin the Braids Together on the Underside

You don’t want your braids to come apart throughout the day, leaving gaps between your serious style. No worries, a few bobby pins will do the trick!

Step 8: Wrap your Face-Framing Braids Around the Back of your Head

Be sure to pin them in place with bobby pins over top of each other. Tuck the ends into the wrapped-around crown and continue to pin until everything feels secure.

Step 9: Pull Out a Few Face-Framing Strands

To give your bohemian braided pony a bit more romantic flair, gently tug a few face-framing strands out to add the perfect whimsical touch to your gorgeous look.

Step 10: Finish with Hair Spray

Give your whole hairstyle a spritz of hair spray and you’re ready for whatever the day has in store.
