To help you refresh your thick hair styling routine, we’ve rounded up four of our favorites. Below, you’ll find the step-by-step process to create easy hairstyles for thick hair, as well as the hair styling products to help them last from day to night.
Thick hair means thick, fairytale-inspired braids. Yes, please!
What you’ll need:
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray
Get the look by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Prime Your Hair
Brush your hair and spray it with a bold control hair spray. This can help give your hair a little extra grip to ensure your hairstyle stays in place.
Step 2: Part Your Hair
Part your hair off to one side before pulling it all over the same shoulder of the larger side of your part.
Step 3: Dutch Braid Your Hair
Starting on the smaller side of your part, Dutch braid from your hairline back around your crown. Pin it in place once you reach the nape of your neck. Next, Dutch braid the larger side of your part back from your hairline to just behind your ear to combine with the other braid. Unpin your first braid and weave your brads together all the ways to the ends. Now, remember, a Dutch braid is characterized by an under-handed weaving technique to make your braid protrude.
Step 4: Fluff and Finish
Once you reach the end of your braid, use one hand to hold it tight, and the other to gently fluff each section of the weave before tying it off with a clear elastic. Finish with another spritz of hair spray.
If you love the look of extra-thick braids but don’t know how to weave very well, you’re in luck! The pull-through braiding technique works to create the appearance of a full Dutch braid with a fraction of the effort.
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Thermal Smoother Cream
Boar bristle brush
Rat tail comb
Clear mini elastics
L’Oréal Paris Elnett Precious Oil Satin Hairspray
Get the look by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Blow-Dry Your Hair
To really showcase your thick hair, start with a smooth canvas. To do so, after you hop out of the shower and towel dry your hair, apply some heat protecting hair cream and wrap your hair around a boar bristle brush to smooth your strands as they dry.
After you’ve finished drying your hair, use your rat tail comb to part your hair down the middle. Using the tail end of the brush will allow you to create a super-precise part that will help make your overall beauty look that much more head-turning.
Step 3: Divide a Small Section of Hair
Use the tail end of your rat tail comb to section off a three-inch section of hair along your hairline. Tie this section off into a mini pony with a clear elastic. Then wrap another mini elastic about two inches down the ends of this ponytail.
Step 3: Pull Hair Through
Right below your first section of hair, use the tail-end of your comb to cleanly section off another chunk of hair. Pull this section of hair through the sectioned off area of your first ponytail. Split the ends in half and secure them underneath the ends of your first ponytail with another clear elastic.
Step 4: Repeat
Continue sectioning and tying off until you reach your ends. After tying off one fully completed pull-through pigtail, move on to the other side of your head following the same technique.
Step 5: Fluff, Spritz, and Finish
Gently tug each section of your pull-through pigtails to give them a more voluminous look. Once your pony is perfectly plumped, spray it with hair spray and repeat the process on the other side of your head.
As someone with thick hair, you’re one of the lucky ones. So many women dream of full, celeb-worthy half-up ponytails, and you’re one of the few that can actually pull it off—you just have to learn how.
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray
Step 1: Give Your Hair Some Texture
While you already have thick hair, it never hurts to add a little extra texture. To do so, spray damp strands with a wave-enhancing hair spray. Gently squeeze your hair after spraying it to help enhance the shape.
Step 2: Pull Your Hair Half Up
Place your fingers just above your ears (in line with your temples) and use them to swoop back and up to your crown to divide your hair into a half-up ponytail. Before tying it off, brush from your hairline back to your hair tie to smooth out any bumps and lumps. Once everything looks flawless, tie it off. Split your half-up pony in half and give it a little pull to perk up your half-up ponytail. So simple!

Step 2: Brush Your Hair into a High Ponytail
After blow-drying your hair, brush it into a high ponytail using your boar bristle brush. Boar bristles are known to expertly smooth hair for a soft, shiny appeal every time Secure your ponytail with a clear elastic once all lumps and bumps are smoothed out.
Step 3: Perfect Your Ballerina Bun
