Hair Color Tutorials

Here’s How to Get a Cherry Red Hair Color for Summer Here’s How to Get a Cherry Red Hair Color for Summer Here’s How to Get a Cherry Red Hair Color for Summer

It’s officially cherry season—and no, we’re not talking about the fruit. (Although that’s true, too!) This spring and summer, take a walk on the wild side by dyeing your hair a beautiful cherry red color. This bright red hue is the statement style of the moment, and we have all the details on how to get the look. Now, let’s go cherry picking!

1. Seek a Stylist or Do It DIY

Before you jump into dyeing, there’s an important decision to be made. Are you going to tackle coloring your own tresses or leave the process up to a pro? We generally recommend seeing a colorist when making a major change, since this could require bleaching and/or multiple sessions to bring your new shade to life. If you do hit up the salon, bring pictures of the exact cherry color you’re imagining. A qualified colorist will be able to take you there or guide you to a shade that will be flattering for your skin tone.

If your search for an edgy color has emboldened you to DIY, try the L’Oréal Paris Féria in R57 Power Reds – Intense Medium Auburn/Cherry Crush. Always follow the directions included with the packaging.

2. Use Color-Safe Products

It’s time to wave goodbye to your regular hair care regimen! Your standard shampoo and conditioner should be swapped out for a system that is safe for color-treated hair. Try the L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensive Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensive Conditioner. Once or twice a week, use the L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensive Ultra Recovery Mask in place for the conditioner for extra hair hydration. Leave the mask on for 3-5 minutes after shampooing, then rinse out.

3. Help Prevent Fading

Let’s agree—it’s no fun when your color starts to dull. And it turns out that UV rays can potentially cause color to fade. Spending the week at the beach on vacation? Wear a floppy hat when you know you’ll be spending an extended amount of time out in the sun to help protect your color.

4. Match Your Makeup to Your Cherry Red Hair

Guess what: Your head-turning shade doesn’t only serve as a way to spruce up your look—it’s also the perfect excuse to try new makeup. Give your cosmetics collection a makeover with these swaps that will suit your fresh dye job.

For your brows: Switch out your old brow pencil for one in a shade that matches your new mane. In a pinch, you can use a matte eye shadow you already own to fill in your brows. A nude palette like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Nude in Nude Intense has shades that will work with a multitude of hair colors.

For your eyes: Give green eyeliner a shot. Since green and red are complementary colors, both your eyes and hair will be perfectly eye-popping.

For your cheeks: Pick a peach blush to give cheeks a natural looking flush, without going overboard. Swipe the L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Blush in Barely Blushing across cheeks to liven up your complexion.

For your lips: Instead of competing against your color, go for a warm neutral lip and let your locks take the spotlight. Try the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour in Toasted Almond for subtle creamy color.

5. Schedule Time for Touchups

When your color fades too far or your roots grow out a bit too much, it’s time for a touchup. Visit the salon or pick up another box of your tried and true hue to bring back that sweet cherry shade. If you notice gray roots but don’t have time for a total fix, opt for a temporary one. Use a root touch up spray for a quick solution. Spritz the L’Oréal Paris Root Cover Up in Red directly onto regrowth and lightly through the rest of your hair to blend in color—it’ll last one shampoo.
