How to Get Galaxy Hair

July 12, 2019

When it comes to coloring your hair, who doesn’t want a hair color that’s out of this world? Well, the latest hair color trend—galaxy hair—is the answer to that desire. Hailing from celestial sources, a galaxy hair color features a gorgeous mix of purple, blue, and magenta shades, making for an other-worldly hair color that’s bold, bright, and sure to turn some heads. Tempted by hair that’s worthy of an extraterrestrial? Here’s how to get galaxy hair for yourself!

WHAT IS GALAXY HAIR?

We already gave you an idea of what galaxy hair is, but we’re happy to talk about this to-die-for color as much as you’d like. Channeling the gorgeous jewel-tones of the cosmos, galaxy hair involves blending shades of purple, blue, magenta, and teal for a final look that will make you feel over the moon. Just like the galaxy itself, a galaxy hair color doesn’t require precise color placement. In other words, you’re free to mix different shades however you desire. Some people choose to layer ribbon highlights in different hues through the hair, while others opt for a galaxy ombré effect. Wherever you place your galaxy hues is up to you, the hallmark of this hair color trend is simply a swirl of beautifully blended cool tones.

HOW TO GET A GALAXY HAIR COLOR

Just like getting into outer space, getting galaxy hair can be quite complicated. If you are committed to galaxy hair for the long-term, you’ll want to book an appointment with your colorist rather than try mixing permanent hues on your own. That’s because getting this hair color will almost certainly require bleaching, not to mention the placement of bright colors (that would be difficult to correct if you messed up).

For those looking to test out galaxy hair without any of the risk, there’s an easier, less permanent, way to get this look—with temporary hair color. You can use temporary hair color sprays and hair makeup to galaxy-ify your locks in a way that will only last until your next shampoo. Keep reading to learn how from our galaxy hair color tutorial.

What you’ll need:

L'Oréal Paris Colorista 1-Day Spray in Blue, Pastel Lavender, Purple, and Hot Pink

OR

L'Oréal Paris Colorista Hair Makeup 1-Day Color in Blue, Lilac, Purple, Raspberry, and Pink Violet

Editor’s note: Since both of these hair color options are rinse-out formulas, you can mix and match shades of both the spray and the hair makeup—get creative!

Get the look:

Step 1: Section your strands

Start by dividing your hair into a half-up, half-down look, using a claw clip to secure the hair on top.

Step 2: Place a towel around your shoulders

Pretty self-explanatory, but don’t skip this step! Placing a towel around your shoulders before you begin will help keep your clothes and skin free of any unwanted color.

Step 3: Apply your darkest hues

Reach for your blue and purple hair colors and begin to apply each color on alternating, small sections of hair.

Step 4: Repeat the process on the top layer

After you’ve applied your base shades of blue and purple, unfasten the top half of your hair and repeat the same process so that when you’re done, blue and purple strands can be seen throughout your entire mane.

Step 5: Add highlights

As the final step, scatter colorful pink and teal highlights throughout your tresses as desired. With galaxy hair, typically these streaks should be done on thin sections of hair throughout the entire head of hair, similar to standard highlights. Have fun and get creative—just like the cosmos, your galaxy hair is meant to be one-of-a-kind and unique. If you don’t like your final version, you can simply shampoo and try again!

HOW TO KEEP YOUR GALAXY HAIR FOR LONGER

If you’re loving your galaxy-inspired ‘do but still aren’t ready for permanent hair dye, try something in between. The L'Oréal Paris Colorista Semi-Permanent Hair Color fades after four to ten shampoos and comes in a variety of galactic hues, including purple, midnight blue, pink, teal, indigo, and aqua.
