Summer is the time of year known for being laidback and carefree. But if you’ve been looking to switch up your hair color, you may have realized that some of the more popular trends as of late are anything but low maintenance. While changing how your hair looks might be on your summer bucket list, you may not want to spend all your free time touching up your color—after all, you’d probably rather hit up the beach and hang with your friends while the weather’s nice out, right? It’s all about finding a hair hue that’s not going to require a ton of upkeep. Here, six ideas that are considerably low maintenance. (Just keep in mind that, although these hair color ideas can be more low maintenance than others, you’ll still need to bleach your hair before going lighter.) So, go ahead and enjoy your summer—without having to worry too much about touching up your hair color!
If you have dark brown hair and want to add a summer glow to your strands without completely kissing your natural color goodbye, this could be the low maintenance look for you. With a blend of blonde balayage mixed into darker roots, this is the perfect hybrid of blonde and brunette. Unlike traditional balayage or bronde, this laidback shade is all about embracing darker roots with touches of dark blonde added in to help create dimension.
Think of the classic blonde-brunette hybrid with a hint of ashy tones added to it—that’s ashy bronde. We have a feeling that this slightly washed-out, almost drift-wood-like color would look stunning on you.
Balayage has become quite popular in the last few years—and there’s no sign of it slowing down anytime soon. That’s because it’s one of the most low-maintenance hair coloring techniques. Balayage entails a colorist hand-painting highlights onto your strands where the sun would hit your face. Since the color is concentrated mostly from your mid-lengths to your ends, no one will be able to tell when your roots start growing in—meaning frequent touch-ups are not necessary.
If you’re planning on getting your faux glow on this summer using self-tanner, then golden beige nude is a gorgeous hair color to consider. Adding in a mixture of gold, beige, and blonde highlights and lowlights to naturally blonde hair can add depth and dimension to your strands.
If you have dark brown hair but still want to get in on the gorgeous balayage trend, ask your colorist for tortoiseshell hair. Subtle streaks of caramel and honey highlights will be woven into your hair, with the most concentration at your ends. This hair color looks especially gorgeous when paired with beach waves. Get the style by spritzing the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray onto towel-dried hair, creating a braid, then undoing the braid once your hair has dried.
Last but certainly not least, we have lived-in hair color. The whole idea of this shade is to embrace your root growth so that you can stretch the time between touch-ups. For this look, your colorist will create a faux root that matches your natural hair color. That way when it grows out, it will look seamless.
Although the above hair color options don’t require a ton of upkeep, it’s still a good idea to tailor your hair care routine for color-treated hair. Use a system of shampoo, conditioner, and mask formulated for color-treated hair. Try the L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensive Shampoo, L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensive Conditioner, and L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensive Ultra Recovery Mask.
