Beachy waves are one of the most sought-after hair styles out there. Celebrities sport them all the time, they’re a go-to look for those with long hair, and they look good on anyone. Better yet, they’re low-effort and can be done on all hair lengths. But most of us aren’t lucky enough to have beachy, wavy hair as our natural texture or spend enough time in the ocean to have them all the time. And even when it comes to DIYing them at home, mastering those perfectly loose curls can be a little daunting. Have no fear, anyone can have beachy waves! This 5-step tutorial makes beach waves a beauty look that’s easy to pull off. All you need is a hair dryer, curling iron, comb, and a few hair care products.
Don't jump straight to styling your hair. First, you'll want to cleanse and condition your hair. We know this isn't the most exciting step, but it's an important part of any styling routine! Not only that, but the shampoo and conditioner you use can impact how beautiful your beachy waves turn out. Now you're interested, right?
To ensure your waves are amazingly voluminous, hop into the shower and use a volumizing hair care system, like the L'Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Shampoo and L'Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Conditioner. When you're finished, gently towel dry your hair, then you're free to move on to the next step in styling your beachy waves.
It’s important to prepare your hair before you apply heat to it, so don't start blasting your hair with your blow dryer until you've used a heat protectant spray, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Quick Dry Primer Spray.
Once your hair is thoroughly prepped, start blowing out your hair with a hair dryer. As you dry your hair, continuously scrunch the ends with your free hand. The goal here is to give your hair a boost of texture as you dry it. Not only will this help your beach waves hold, it will also make them look as natural as possible.
Once your hair is dry, split it into 2-inch sections and reach for your curling wand. Wrap each section around the wand, twisting it as you do—this will give your waves an undone look when you unravel them. Be sure to not wrap the very ends of your hair around the curling iron. Leaving the ends straight will look more natural and tousled. Once you release each section of hair from the curling iron, give it a gentle tug on the end. This will help avoid super-tight curls.
On that note, make sure your curls aren’t too perfect. Beachy waves should look as if you've been swimming in the ocean all day, and no one leaves the beach with full barrel curls. To further prevent your curls from looking full-on beauty pageant (as opposed to beachy), be sure to lock them in with a hair spray that provides a brushable hold. Try the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Fine Control Hairspray, which will still allow you to work your fingers through your locks to loosen any curls that are too tight. Plus, it won't leave you with hard, crunchy curls.
You can’t have beachy waves without a little texture, so gently back comb your strands to boost their texture and volume once you’re done curling your hair. This will help make the curls appear more naturally tousled. It can be tempting not to touch freshly-curled hair, but don’t be afraid to mess your curls up a little. Give your hair a shake and use your fingers to style your hair just the way you want it. If you still want a bit more volume, spritz your strands with a texturizing spray, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Air-Blown Texture Mist. Once you’re done putting your hair styling product in, use your hands to gently scrunch the ends of your hair up towards your scalp.
Once you’re done tousling, apply a few drops of the L'Oréal Paris EverSleek Frizz Finish Oil-in-Serum for a finishing, shiny touch. Not only that, the oil-serum hybrid will help tame any frizz that may have appeared during your styling session.
Almost finished! Before you go out and rock your beachy waves wherever you please, lock in your look with more hairspray.
Once everything is said and done, you’ll have perfectly soft, windblown waves with amazing shine. This is an effortless hair style that you’ll want to wear every day. Want to achieve the same results without using any heat tools? Check out How to Get Beach Waves by Air Drying Your Hair.
