So, you’ve decided to dye your hair and rock a new hair color. You’ve probably already researched the best blonde hair color for your skin tone and whether you should opt for a semi-permanent or permanent hair dye—and that’s great. It’s true that these are important things to take into consideration. That said, your research shouldn’t end there. Don’t forget, after dyeing, you’ll need a new hair care routine too. Taking care of color-treated hair is key to keeping your locks healthy and your new hue vibrant. That’s why you’ll want to become an expert on the topic of hair care for color-treated hair before you change your color. To help you out, we’re sharing the inside scoop we received from Jonathan Colombini—L’Oréal Paris expert and Los Angeles-based celebrity hairstylist—on everything you need to know about taking care of color-treated hair.
The short answer: yes! Opting for a sulfate-free hair care system is the best way to keep your colored locks fresh and healthy. “Hair color can make hair more porous, which causes it to absorb and release moisture more easily. This can cause loss of color molecules every time your hair gets wet. Sulfates can strip color from hair, so look for a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates contain salt, which strips away moisture, and moisture loss is one of the main causes of color fading,” says Colombini.
Try the L’Oréal Paris Ever Collection. This hair care line is sulfate-free, deeply replenishing, and protects hair color from fading. Speaking on the line, Colombini says, “The shampoos and conditioners are perfect for keeping your hair vibrant. Try to wait at least 72 hours before you shampoo your hair after a fresh color job.”
When it comes to styling color-treated hair, there isn’t much you have to change, but there are a few steps to keep in mind. “I’m a fan of air drying your hair to not add as much heat,” Colombini says. The Ever line offers a few heat free hair styling options. If you want to tame frizz and sport a smooth style, use the L’Oréal Paris EverSleek Frizz Finish Oil-in-Serum. If you’d prefer to embrace your natural curls, use the L’Oréal Paris EverCurl Sculpt & Hold Cream-Gel on damp hair.
Colombini continues, “If your hair type doesn’t allow air drying then try spreading out your shampoos to prevent frequent blow-drying. When you do shampoo, try using a treatment like the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Deep Moisture Hair Sheet Mask after for some added moisture. Colored hair is more vulnerable to heat. To keep from frying your hair, apply a heat protectant spray before using heat tools.”
As mentioned above, color-treated hair is more vulnerable to heat. “Adjust your water temperature to lukewarm or cold when rinsing. Hot water lifts the outer cuticle layer, which is one of the most common reasons that color fades,” Colombini explains.
He also advises that taking care of color-treated hair goes beyond how you treat your strands in the shower. If you’re spending a lot of time in the sun, Colombini recommends wearing a hat to protect your color.
“The best products I have found for color treated hair are sulfate-free, as sulfates can cause frizz and color damage. The L’Oréal Paris Ever Collection has so many amazing choices for every woman, whether they are looking for more moisture, more volume, thickening, or repairing,” says Colombini.
Of course, not all hair colors are created equal. Keep your hair color in mind when picking out your hair care products. If you’ve recently become a blonde, try swapping your current shampoo and conditioner for the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Blonde Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris EverPure Blonde Conditioner. In addition to your standard hair care products, Colombini suggests using a hair treatment that will keep your color looking fresh and non-brassy, like the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Blonde Shade Reviving Treatment.
