Beautiful hair is nourished hair. No matter the color, length, or texture, nothing compares to the natural beauty of hair that is healthy and hydrated. So why do so many of us continue to struggle with hair that is dry and lifeless?
Just as we care for our skin and figure, it is so important to care for and nourish our hair. Hair that is nourished is softer, shinier, and looks more lustrous. And, contrary to what your frazzled ends might tell you, it’s within reach. Read on for a few tips on how to make dry hair a thing of the past.
#1- Protect before heat
Completely avoiding the hair dryer may not be realistic, but applying a heat protectant before picking up a heat tool can help prevent dryness. Try a few drops of an oil serum before drying hair to replenish moisture.
#2- Use products with oils
Oils have been used for centuries as a source of hydration and nourishment. Packed with essential acids, they are the ideal ingredient to fight dryness and keep your hair looking silky and shiny. Try an oil treatment overnight: apply an oil serum or oil product to damp or dry hair and wrap in a bun before bedtime. Look for products formulated with oils and extracts like Amla, Coconut, Sunflower, and Argan. (And oils and extracts aren’t just for treatments: look out for oil-based shampoo and conditioner to start your oil regimen in the shower.)
#3- Protect hair from dryness in the sun
We take precautions to protect our skin when in the sun, but we often overlook our hair. Take care to keep hair nourished and hydrated while in the sun and pack an oil serum to protect against dryness and damage:toss an oil serum into your beach bag or hiking backpack for on-the-go hydration and shine. Rub a dime-sized drop into your palms and run over hair as a protective layer. Added bonus: easy fix to tame flyaways.
Use a nourishing hair mask once or twice a week. Curly hair in particular requires extra maintenance. Look for a mask tailored to dry hair or dry, curly hair. Or, use an oil serum or oil-in-cream product as a pre-shampoo treatment: apply to the ends of hair and let sit for 5-10 minutes on dry hair before showering to give dry ends a boost of nourishment before washing.
#5- Remember healthy life habits
Just as with healthy looking skin, healthy looking hair starts with what you put into your body. Hydrate with lots of water and incorporate plenty of fruit and vegetables into your diet. Your hair will thank you.
