Some things are permanent, but your hair part isn’t one of them. You’re free to make a change, even if you’ve always thought you were a side part gal. Of course, it will take a bit of effort.
Maybe you want to try the middle part trend. Have you seen the Tik Toks saying everyone looks better with their hair parted down the center? Or, perhaps, you only want to switch your part from one side to the other. Either way, we’re all about trying something new in the name of a mane makeover. That’s why we want to help. Here, we’re offering tips on how to change your part. Just wait until you see how big of a difference a new part can make in your overall look.
If you know you want to try out a new part but aren’t set on something specific, we can offer up a few tips.
If you have a round face shape…a perfectly centered middle part will be the most flattering.
If you have a square face shape…a side part is your match. Play around to see which side is your favorite.
If you have a heart face shape…look at celebrities with the same shape—you’ll notice most rock a deep side part.
If you have a diamond face shape…try styling your hair with a side part. This will draw attention to your sharp cheekbones.
If you have an oval face shape...lucky you. You can pull off any part!
We’re usually the number one proponents of air drying your hair, but it’s not the best option when your goal is to try a new part. If your hair dries on its own, it’s likely to settle into your natural part, and you won’t have much choice in the matter. And once your hair is dry, it’s a lot harder to change how your hair is parted. Breaking out your blow-dryer allows you to guide your strands into the exact style you want, including dictating where your part lies. Just make sure to use a heat protectant, like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Quick Dry Primer Spray, first.
If you wear your hair parted the same way every day, it’s likely to fall that way without much effort. You can pretty much shake out your strands, and they’ll end up in the same spot they always do. Well, you can’t take the same approach if you want a different part. You have to be more strategic about it. Use the end of a rattail comb to define your part. While using your fingers or a brush is better than not guiding your hair into position at all, the comb will allow you to be even more precise. This is especially key if you want a perfectly straight part.
After you’ve created your part, you may find that your hair isn’t lying quite right. In this case, it may require a bit of intervention (in the form of hair clips) on your part. Use a clip or two to pin down your hair on either side of the part. Over time, your hair will lay better on its own. With that said, you might want to keep wearing the clips anyway; hair clips and barrettes are seriously trendy right now!
Besides clips, you can use hairspray to hold your strands in place. This is true for any hairstyle but can be especially helpful when manipulating your mane to give it a new part. We love using the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Precious Oil Satin Hairspray since it not only offers staying power but also leaves hair with a gorgeous shine.
It’s possible that you’ll find your hair looked more voluminous with your previous part. With time, if you continue to wear your new hairstyle, this shouldn’t be an issue. However, when you first mix it up, you’re exposing new hair that was previously expected to lay flat. It takes a bit of time to adjust. But we wouldn’t let that stop you from experimenting with a different part. You can create volume wherever it’s lacking with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT High Lift Creation Spray. Spritz the volume spray onto either side of your new hair part and use your fingers to fluff up the hair. Problem solved!
