You know you support women being empowered, but what, exactly, is women’s empowerment? It’s something near and dear to our hearts, so we’ll be happy to break it down for you. And not only that, but we’re sharing a list of amazing women-led organizations you can champion, which—spoiler alert—is a great way to participate in female empowerment. Ready to learn more about being empowered, plus 10 amazing women in leadership roles that you can support? Read on for a little lesson on empowering women.
Women’s empowerment can be defined as many things, but at the forefront, it’s a call to action to support women of all ages, in self-actualizing and celebrating their incredible worth. We believe that every woman is worth it, fiercely championing self-worth and empowerment for more than 40 years. L’Oréal Paris’ signature philanthropic program—Women of Worth—honors those who go above and beyond, selflessly volunteering their time to empower others. Whether born out of adversity, tragedy, a drive to right a wrong, or standing up against atrocity, their passion for diverse and powerful causes is united in a singular vision—bring the power of knowing you are “worth it” to the world.
One of our favorite ways to participate in women’s empowerment is to support organizations founded by women and women in leadership roles in general. Below, we’re naming 10 organizations to consider supporting, each one fearlessly led by past L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth honorees.
Founded by one of L’Oréal Paris’ 2015 Women of Worth honorees, Maria Rose Belding, MEANS Database is an interactive website allowing food pantries and soup kitchens to quickly coordinate exchanges of excess food items between each other and from local donors.
The Validation Project is an international organization founded by 2017 honoree, Val Weisler. They work with more than 6,000 teenagers in 105 countries, providing them with the resources and guidance they need to develop confidence and gain self-worth.
Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, which was founded by Holly Jacobs (honored in 2018), is a non-profit that serves thousands of victims of cyber sexual assault around the world and advocates for technological, social, and legal innovation to fight the offense.
Founded by 2013 L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth honoree, Somy Ali, No More Tears is a non-profit organization devoted to rescuing victims of domestic violence and helping survivors with assistance to meet basic needs and a variety of support services to find jobs and complete their empowerment.
EBeauty is a non-profit founded by Carolyn Keller, who was honored by L’Oréal Paris in 2018, that supports women undergoing treatment for cancer through a wig exchange program.
Co-founded by 2016 honoree, Carly Yoost, Child Rescue Coalition is a non-profit organization that has developed global technology to help law enforcement officials worldwide rescue children from predators and potential sexual attacks.
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is a non-profit committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer, the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 18 in the United States. Another organization led by a woman, the non-profit was founded by Gretchen Holt Wilt, who was a L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth honoree in 2011.
2015 Women of Worth honoree, Schinnel Leake, founded Extra-Ordinary Birthdays, an organization that provides individualized birthday parties for homeless children to make them feel loved and valued.
Founded by Laura Reiss (2018 honoree), Kindness Matters 365 is a movement that educates and inspires children about the importance of being grateful for who they are, showing kindness to themselves and others, and the many different ways that they can give back so they can make a positive impact within their own communities and the world.
S.O.A.P. Project, which stands for "Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution,” was founded by 2017 honoree, Theresa Flores. The outreach program raises awareness and provides resources for victims of human trafficking by placing educational materials and bars of soap in hotels and motels across the country with information on how to seek help.
