Another day, another ingredient you need to add to your beauty arsenal! If you’re anything like us, you’re probably up to your eyeballs with buzzy products in your collection. However, when it comes to locking down ingredients that do both your hair and skin justice, not too many can live up to the hype. In the spirit of keeping you ahead of the beauty game, it’s only right we put neem oil on your radar. Purported to provide a myriad of benefits, we believe that there are plenty of potential neem oil uses that will spark your interest. Intrigued? Below, we’re sharing what you need to know about neem oil and how you can incorporate products with the ingredient into your hair and skin care routines.
First things first, it’s time to answer the obvious question: What is neem oil? According to the National Center of Biotechnology Information (NCBI), neem oil, aka Azadirachta indica, is a member of the Meliaceae tree family that’s native to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal.
Made from the fruit and seeds of the neem tree, the International Research Journal of Biological Sciences shares that this oil has been used for hundreds of years as a medicinal treatment and for skin care purposes. They also reveal that neem is used in personal care products such as shampoos, hair oils, eczema creams, and antiseptic creams.
Now that you know a bit more about common neem oil uses, you’re probably wondering if it’s also a match for hair. And the truth is, you can find it in shampoos and hair oils—but most of the research is focused on one hair concern: lice.
Hair lice can be tricky to manage, but there is research to support that neem oil may help. An NCBI study found that using a single treatment of neem seed extract-shampoo helps to fight head lice. Of course, if you’re looking for treatment options for lice, you should consult your doctor. They can help you find the right plan of action, whether that’s using products formulated with neem oil or something else entirely.
Think neem oil deserves a place in your hair care routine? Below, we’ve identified three ways you can incorporate products with neem oil into your hair care routine.
Consider adding a duo formulated with neem oil to your shower routine.
Hair masks are a great addition to your hair care regimen, and one formulated with neem oil may be worth adding to your routine.
Who says that serums are only reserved for your face? A neem oil hair serum could be just what your strands are calling out for.
Next, it’s time to focus on neem oil for skin! You’ve likely heard about some of the purported benefits of this beloved oil. For one example, an NCBI study revealed that a mixture of neem oil and hypericum oil is a great fit for healing post-surgical scalp wounds. It is also said to help treat psoriasis, per the NCBI. A study by the Journal of Acute Disease also showed promising results of neem oil being used to help treat acne. Since these skin conditions are all ones best treated with a doctor—and there aren’t a plethora of studies on these topics—make sure you consult with a professional before trying neem oil.
The NCBI also shares that neem oil is rich in fatty acids, including linoleic, palmitic, oleic, and stearic acids. The NCBI explains that essential fatty acids play a role in the prevention of transepidermal water loss, which can help skin remain hydrated and moisturized. This may be why skin care products formulated with neem oil are becoming increasingly popular despite the limited research.
If neem oil has managed to spark your interest as a skin care ingredient, we are sharing three ways to help you add it to your routine.
No matter what skin type you’re working with, cleansing should be the foundation of your skin care routine. Consider incorporating a neem oil-infused option into your product line-up.
When it comes to giving your skin the attention it deserves, a face moisturizer should always be at the top of the list. Since neem oil is known for having moisturizing and hydrating benefits, try a moisturizer formulated with the ingredient.
Just as we recommended hair serums formulated with neem oil, a face serum is another option you might try. You can even layer a serum under your moisturizer formulated with neem oil to help boost hydration.
